Andrew Cuomo Targets NYC Mayor’s Office, Criticizes Current Administration

Former Governor Andrew Cuomo is setting his sights on New York City Hall as he enters the race for mayor, emphasizing his record and his vision for the city’s future.

Cuomo portrays New York as a city in crisis, reflecting the concerns of many residents. “New Yorkers feel unsettled, they feel unsafe when they walk into a subway, they’re nervous when they see a homeless person on the street who may be mentally ill,” he stated.

The former governor criticized current Mayor Eric Adams, asserting that Adams has been ineffective both in tone and substance.

“We have to make progress faster; the little things matter. Regulating e-bikes, constructing affordable housing—it’s not difficult,” Cuomo remarked, highlighting what he sees as a failure of the current administration to address pressing issues.

While some critics, including Mayor Adams, attribute a rise in crime to bail reform laws signed by Cuomo, he dismissed these claims. “I would have made changes to the bail reform law, but there is no doubt that bail reform is not the issue today,” he asserted.

Cuomo, who previously served nearly 11 years as governor, is not shy about expressing his views on the management of the NYPD under Adams. He acknowledged the recent appointment of Jessica Tisch as police commissioner, stating, “Finally, after how many police commissioners? I agree, Jessica Tisch is a good police commissioner.”

Defending his own record during the COVID-19 pandemic, Cuomo acknowledged criticism regarding a directive to allow nursing homes to readmit recovering COVID-19 patients, but argued, “Federal officials were doing the best they could with the information they had at the time, and we followed that guidance.”

Cuomo argued that New York had actually fared reasonably well compared to other states, claiming, “Only 12 states had a lower rate of death than we did, even though we had it first and we had it worst.”

Asserting that his extensive management experience distinguishes him from his opponents, Cuomo noted support from former Mayor Michael Bloomberg. He emphasized the need for capability and experience in a mayor, saying, “A mayor needs experience. And that’s who’s running for mayor now—people who have no experience.”

Cuomo also voiced his opinion on the political atmosphere surrounding President Donald Trump. He insisted that New Yorkers want a mayor who can stand up to Trump, stating, “What Trump did in L.A. is what he’s going to do here. There’ll be protests. And then Trump will say, ‘well, now I have to send in the federal troops.'”

Additionally, Cuomo accused Mayor Adams of being complicit with federal authorities, claiming, “He made a deal with the president, he sold out the people of New York to make that deal, and he has been complicit and cooperative with ICE when he should be standing up to ICE.”

As the race for mayor heats up, Cuomo’s campaign appears to be a blend of his previous record in office and an appeal for actionable change amid the city’s challenges. With a focus on the issues that matter most to working-class New Yorkers, he positions himself as a candidate ready to restore a sense of safety and stability to the city.
