FORT BELVOIR, Va. — The U.S. Army is poised to celebrate its monumental 250th birthday on June 14, 2025, marking two and a half centuries of unwavering dedication to defending the nation and forging global partnerships.
In recognizing this historic milestone, the Army emphasizes the ongoing evolution and significance of military intelligence in protecting national security. Presently, the U.S. Army Intelligence and Security Command (INSCOM) plays a critical role in this transformative journey, ensuring commanders have the necessary tools to navigate the complexities of today’s threat landscape.
To honor the Army’s 250th birthday, INSCOM held a special ceremony on June 9 at its Nolan Building headquarters, led by Maj. Gen. Timothy D. Brown, the commanding general of INSCOM.
“For 250 years, we have defended our great nation as Soldiers, civil servants, and citizens,” Maj. Gen. Brown stated. “We focus on our people, build our lethality, and continuously adapt our warfighting capabilities to fight and win when called upon.”
Brown emphasized the Army’s collective commitment to service, highlighting the importance of unity and the legacy formed by those who have served.
Accompanying General Brown during the ceremony was Col. Michael P. Solovey, INSCOM’s assistant chief of staff for G-4, who unveiled an original watercolor artwork depicting Soldiers from various eras, from the Revolutionary War to the present.
The ceremony featured reenactors in historical uniforms representing a colonial militiaman, a WWI ‘Doughboy,’ a WWII 82nd Airborne paratrooper, a Vietnam-era infantryman, and a modern-day NCO, with the fifth Soldier being one of INSCOM’s active-duty personnel.
“I designed the watercolor to give back to our Army something that did not exist and needed to exist,” Solovey explained. “It portrays resilience, unity of effort, and teamwork; showcasing our journey from inception to the present.”
Since its founding during the American Revolution, Army Military Intelligence (MI) has been integral to the Army’s success. The early reliance on scouts, spies, and handwritten dispatches has developed into a sophisticated global operation where intelligence is paramount for defense strategies.
The establishment of INSCOM in 1977 marked a significant evolution in military intelligence, centralizing the Army’s intelligence operations and reinforcing its strategic role.
