The FBI has recently renewed interest in the cold-case murder of 20-year-old Calvin Riley, who was tragically shot in San Francisco’s Aquatic Park in August 2016.
This incident occurred during the height of the Pokémon Go phenomenon, a time when many locals and tourists flocked to popular attractions throughout the Bay Area to play the augmented-reality game.
On the fateful evening, Calvin was playing the game with a friend, who recounted that they had separated briefly while playing.
As the friend turned a corner of a building, he heard a gunshot and saw Calvin fall.
Witnessing the act, the friend described how the shooter fled the scene, potentially escaping in a vehicle.
Calvin, a student at San Joaquin Delta College in Stockton who had graduated from Junipero Serra High School in 2015, had moved to the Bay Area from Lowell, Massachusetts, hoping for a safer life.
The circumstances surrounding his death were perplexing; no obvious motive was identified, leading many to believe it was either a random act of violence or a case of mistaken identity.
At the time, the United States Park Police (USPP) led the investigation with assistance from the San Francisco Police Department (SFPD).
However, as months passed without significant leads, the case stalled.
A sketch of a person of interest was released a month after the incident, and in 2017, law enforcement announced a $50,000 reward for information that could help solve the case.
In a significant turn of events, the FBI took over the investigation two years ago, and recently unveiled another sketch of a second person of interest.
This latest sketch depicts a bearded man who was reportedly seen recording video in the area at the time of the shooting.
The initial sketch portrayed a different man who was observed driving a vehicle believed to be connected to the crime, alongside a blonde female passenger.
The FBI also reported that two suspect vehicles, a 2015 white Hyundai Sonata and a dark-colored Audi A3 wagon, fled the scene immediately following the incident.
As the ninth anniversary of Calvin’s murder approaches, the FBI and USPP are urging the public to help identify these persons of interest, who are sought for questioning regarding the shooting.
The emotional toll of the murder has been profound for Calvin’s family.
His father, Sean Riley, shared with NBC Bay Area that the loss has “basically torn our family apart,” describing it as a nightmare that has lasted nine years.
Calvin’s mother, Keriann Riley, expressed her gratitude for the FBI’s efforts, particularly praising Special Agent Casey for her dedication to the case.
Keriann expressed hope that should a suspect be apprehended, it would provide some closure for the family, emphasizing the importance of ensuring that the perpetrator cannot harm anyone else.
Despite their desire for justice, they understand that resolution will not bring back their son.
