South Salt Lake, Utah, has officially launched a new phase in its Downtown District with the grand opening of One Burton, a mixed-use development that is set to reshape urban living in the Salt Lake Valley.
The event, celebrated with a ribbon cutting, showcased a project designed to blend Mid-Century Modern aesthetics with contemporary hotel-style amenities.
One Burton aims to attract residents who value creativity, design, and an outdoor lifestyle, contributing to the city’s ambition of becoming the region’s ‘Creative Hub.’
Marking this significant milestone, Jason Algaze, Principal at Abstract Development, reflected on the importance of collaboration and thoughtful design, stating, “It meant a great deal to celebrate this milestone with our partners, neighbors, colleagues, and friends who helped bring this grand vision to life.”
Algaze emphasized the building as more than just a structure; it represents a commitment to transforming South Salt Lake for the future.
Mayor Cherie Wood shared her vision for the city during the ribbon cutting, underscoring One Burton’s contribution to enhancing the quality of life in South Salt Lake.
She remarked, “This development not only provides much-needed housing and retail space but also embodies our vision for a more connected, walkable, and sustainable community.”
Strategically positioned on a 1.24-acre site at the intersection of Burton Avenue and Main Street, the $50 million, eight-story building features 180 rental residences.
These include studio and two-bedroom units, designed to optimize both space and natural light, complete with private balconies or patios that offer stunning mountain views.
The development also includes a ground-floor retail space, structured parking, and a grand porte-cochere entrance inspired by the architectural styles of historic resorts, making it a welcoming urban destination.
“From the moment you see the structure—or step inside—you can tell I’m a true admirer of the golden era of architecture, from Richard Neutra to Charles and Ray Eames,” Algaze noted.
He aimed to create a design that is both iconic and inviting, harmoniously integrating One Burton into the natural landscape of the Wasatch Mountains.
The artistic vision extends throughout the property, adding vibrancy to the community.
A private gallery within the building leads to an outdoor courtyard, while a striking four-panel butterfly mural by renowned French artist Mantra connects Main Street to the building’s rear facade.
Complementing this creative atmosphere, One Burton offers various luxury amenities designed for connection and engagement within the community.
Residents and guests can enjoy access to a rooftop dining and entertainment lounge with breathtaking panoramic views, an oversized hot tub, cabana room, and outdoor lounge areas.
Additional amenities include a game room, co-working spaces, a fully-equipped fitness center with 360-degree views, a pet spa, a dog park, and secure bike storage, contributing to the development’s focus on a lifestyle of convenience and leisure.
Gary Ellis, President and CEO of Jacobsen Construction, commented on the project’s impact, stating, “One Burton represents the type of people-centered growth that is so vital to preserving the extraordinary quality of life that Salt Lake Valley residents enjoy.”
He noted that the building would foster connectivity and accessibility in the community, pointing toward the exciting future of the East Streetcar Corridor with One Burton as a central feature.
The development sets a precedent in the Downtown District for community-focused growth, establishing a new benchmark for future projects.
As the first significant development in the area, One Burton has reshaped the approach to urban planning regarding zoning, infrastructure, and design.
Abstract Development’s vision reflects a larger commitment to creating living spaces that enhance community ties, with the promise of expanding initiatives moving forward.
Jason Algaze and his team faced several challenges while bringing One Burton to fruition, including navigating new zoning regulations and updating local infrastructure.
Through collaboration with city officials and the surrounding community, the project team was able to overcome these hurdles successfully, ensuring an innovative design that stands out in the urban landscape.
Reflecting on the building’s construction and vision, Mihnea Dobre, Principal at Architectural Nexus, said, “One Burton’s Mid-Century Modern aesthetic and thoughtful urban integration make it a true landmark for the city.”
As a significant addition to South Salt Lake, One Burton not only provides new living opportunities but also enhances the cultural and artistic fabric of the community.
The development’s proximity to the Millcreek Bike Trail offers residents easy access to trails, public transportation via TRAX, and major freeways, further promoting an active, interconnected urban lifestyle.
