Amid new legislation passed by congressional Republicans aimed at tightening federal safety net programs, alarming findings from a recent statewide audit have surfaced regarding Alaska’s Department of Health.
The audit, conducted by the state legislative auditor and released this past Monday, highlights a concerning trend: the Division of Public Assistance in Alaska is repeatedly failing to comply with existing federal laws overseeing benefits programs including Medicaid and the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP).
