The body of Marites Buenafe, a 62-year-old hiker, was discovered in Juneau after an extensive two-day search following her disappearance while vacationing on the cruise ship Norwegian Bliss on July 1, 2025.
Buenafe, a resident of Kentucky, had left the cruise vessel to embark on a solo hike from Gold Ridge to Gastineau Peak. After she failed to return, cruise staff promptly alerted the Alaska Wildlife Troopers about her absence, leading to an immediate search effort.
Alaska State Troopers reported that they were notified around 3:20 p.m. on July 1 about the overdue hiker. The search was organized quickly, with Juneau Mountain Rescue conducting ground searches complemented by thermal drone technology. Aerial attempts were made by AWT Helo 5 and a U.S. Coast Guard helicopter to locate her in the rugged terrain.
Despite the initial search efforts, the mission was paused overnight but resumed early the next day. By July 3, over a dozen volunteers joined local rescuers in the ongoing search for the missing woman. Tragically, Buenafe’s body was found shortly after 11:56 a.m. on that day, approximately 1,700 feet below Gold Ridge’s ridge line, thanks to the efforts of an Alaska National Guard helicopter crew.
Authorities have announced that her remains will be sent to the state medical examiner’s office for examination to determine the cause of death.
Marites C. Buenafe was a respected family medicine doctor, having practiced for over twenty years. She held her medical degree from Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine and was affiliated with the University of Kentucky Albert B. Chandler Hospital.
Her last communication with family indicated that she was planning to hike the trails above Juneau, specifically mentioning the Mount Roberts Tramway prior to her hike. A spokesperson for Norwegian Cruise Line expressed condolences and stated that their CARE team was providing support to the family during this painful time.
