San Diego Chef Emily Brubaker Wins $250,000 on ‘Yes, Chef!’

San Diego’s culinary scene just gained a remarkable spotlight with the triumph of local chef Emily Brubaker on the new competitive cooking series, ‘Yes, Chef!’.

The Resort Executive Chef at Omni La Costa Resort and Spa in Carlsbad, Brubaker captured the grand prize of $250,000, captivating the judges, which included renowned chefs Martha Stewart and José Andrés.

Her winning culinary creation showcased a spectacular three-course dining experience that highlighted her culinary skill and innovative approach to food.

Brubaker’s first course, a delicate scallop crudo paired with poached daikon and caviar, set the tone for her bold execution in the competition.

For the main dish, she impressively prepared an American wagyu New York strip, served alongside a potato pavé drenched in a rich tarragon demi-glace.

However, it was her dessert that really took the judges by surprise and praise; a foie gras-topped bread pudding drizzled with honey gastrique and sprinkled with candied hazelnuts.

Critics noted that Brubaker took a calculated risk with her dessert, which ultimately paid off.

In an interview with San Diego Magazine, Brubaker expressed her fulfillment after receiving the judges’ commendation, stating, “The pride of words from Martha and José—they’ll stick with me forever.

Not only do I want to be a great chef, but I want to be a good person… What a great feeling.”

Brubaker’s victory represents not only a financial reward but also a personal achievement, affirming her commitment to her culinary career.

Reflecting on her journey, she said, “It validates that I’m in the right career.

It isn’t just a win, but a deep personal affirmation of my passion and purpose, and a reminder that I did this not just for myself, but for my family who stood by me every step of the way.

I’m more excited for what the future holds now that I’m a little less stubborn and more confident.”

To compete on ‘Yes, Chef!’, Chef Brubaker had to be nominated, along with having to overcome personal challenges to facilitate her growth, both in and out of the kitchen.

Her husband provided the nomination, highlighting her ‘stubbornness, impatience, and lack of self-assurance.’

Throughout the season, viewers witnessed Brubaker’s significant personal growth, showcasing her development in confidence and kitchen leadership skills.

Her husband, Jake, who is also a professional chef at the La Jolla Beach and Tennis Club, stood alongside her during the final challenge as her Sous Chef.

He was notably impressed by her composure during the high-stakes cook-off, marking a genuine transition in her relationship with confidence.

As a well-regarded executive chef, Brubaker has a significant background, having worked with culinary legends and focusing on sourcing high-quality ingredients.

Currently, she oversees eight restaurant outlets at Omni La Costa Resort and Spa.

Brubaker’s winning journey was further supported by Omni La Costa, which shared her progress extensively on its social media platforms.

To celebrate her achievement, she will host a special event on Saturday from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Omni La Costa’s ‘Yes, Chef!’ Table.

This exclusive event features an intimate four-course dinner with expertly paired wines as part of the 60 Years of La Costa celebration.

This celebration is an independently organized event by Omni La Costa Resort & Spa during the weekend festivities.
