As Memorial Day approaches, San Diegans are coming together to honor the brave men and women who gave their lives in service to the nation. Numerous events and ceremonies throughout the city provide opportunities for remembrance and tribute.
One of the key events is the wreath-laying ceremony at the USS Midway Museum, scheduled for 9 a.m. This ceremonial gathering will be attended by World War II Navy veterans who will serve as guest speakers.
The event includes a performance of the National Anthem by a vocalist from the Navy Band Southwest, a poignant ‘missing man flyover,’ and the ceremonial tossing of a memorial wreath over the side of the historic ship.
Additionally, for those unable to attend in person, the ceremony can be viewed virtually via Facebook Live. Following the ceremony, the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary Arizona Band will perform at noon and again at 2:15 p.m. Bonita Vista High School’s Music Machine is set to play at 12:30 p.m., and a National Moment of Remembrance will be observed at 3 p.m.
Another notable observance takes place at Fort Rosecrans National Cemetery, marking its annual Memorial Day Ceremony. This site holds significant historical value, being the resting place for numerous revered figures, including 19 soldiers from Brig. Gen. Stephen W. Kearny’s command who died in the 1846 Battle of San Pasqual.
Among the cemetery’s memorials are 23 Medal of Honor winners, affirming its status as a sacred ground dedicated to the memory of those who served with valor.
The Mt. Soledad National Veterans Memorial will also host an annual Memorial Day ceremony. This year, the memorial will focus on honoring Seaman Lakiba Nicole Palmer and 16 of her fellow U.S. Navy sailors lost during the USS Cole attack on October 12, 2000.
Neil O’Connell, executive director of the Mt. Soledad Memorial Association, emphasized the significance of the day as a time to remember the sacrifices made for freedom.
He highlighted the 25th anniversary of the USS Cole tragedy, stating, “These 17 heroes represent the thousands of individuals we honor on Memorial Day. Their sacrifice, and the sacrifices of all who have died in service, will always be remembered.”
The Mt. Soledad event will feature music from the Marine Band San Diego, a ceremonial 21-gun salute, and the solemn playing of Taps. Remarks will be made by notable figures including Command Master Chief James Parlier, who was aboard the USS Cole during the attack, and Rear Adm. Justin A. Kubu, the keynote speaker for the occasion.
The event is expected to draw numerous Gold Star family members and attack survivors, joining the community in honoring the memory of fallen service members.
In a more festive setting, Petco Park will host the Padres versus Miami Marlins game at 5:40 p.m. on Memorial Day. This game will include a Memorial Day Military Salute to recognize the contributions of military servicemen and women.
Active-duty service members, veterans, and their families can enjoy a discount of up to 10% on tickets, which can be purchased online through GOVX verification.
For those planning to attend the game, public transportation will operate on a holiday schedule, making it convenient to access the venue. Various MTS lines will lead directly to Petco Park, with additional service scheduled before and after the game.
For a nostalgic experience, the vintage San Diego Trolley will be in operation on the Silver Line, alongside the original red San Diego Trolley, which will take a downtown loop. The Silver Line Vintage Trolley will start its hourly schedule from the 12th & Imperial Transit Center, commencing service at 9:07 a.m.
This Memorial Day, San Diego stands united in remembrance and gratitude, honoring the selfless sacrifices of those who have served the nation.
