Chula Vista Mayor John McCann is scheduled to deliver his State of the City address on Tuesday evening, expressing optimism about the future of San Diego County’s second-largest city.
The event will take place at the Gaylord Pacific Resort & Convention Center at 6:30 p.m., marking the first public gathering at this newly opened venue.
In his address, McCann plans to highlight significant city developments, including the recent inauguration of the Gaylord Pacific at the bayfront.
This new resort and convention center is anticipated to generate $11.5 million annually in tax revenue, contribute approximately $500 million to the local economy, and create thousands of jobs for residents.
With the financial benefits from the Gaylord Pacific, McCann aims to enhance Chula Vista’s infrastructure, ensuring both residents and visitors can fully enjoy the city.
The mayor will also discuss the upcoming 2026 city budget, which is poised to be the largest in Chula Vista’s history.
McCann commented to ABC 10News on the city’s fiscal health, stating, ‘We’re one of the few cities that has a balanced budget, fully funded reserves.
We have no layoffs.
We have no service cuts, so we’re continuing to be fiscally responsible, making sure that we’re providing the best services we can.’
Among the topics he will address are the decrease in homelessness within the city, advancements in managing the ongoing Tijuana River sewage crisis, and improvements in home ownership opportunities for residents.
In other local news, a standoff occurred in Lemon Grove when a man, identified as 25-year-old Tyrin Carter, barricaded himself inside a home after allegedly threatening to shoot someone.
The incident unfolded Monday afternoon on the 1700 block of Skyline Drive.
Sheriff’s deputies were alerted to reports of an assault with a deadly weapon around noon.
Carter had gone into a residence and brandished a firearm, leading to a struggle with another resident who attempted to disarm him.
An additional resident intervened with a golf club, successfully disarming Carter.
However, Carter retreated inside the house and barricaded himself, leading to a deployment of the SWAT team.
After hours of negotiation, he surrendered to authorities at approximately 8 p.m.
In national news, President Trump recently escalated his ongoing battle with Harvard University, issuing a threat to withdraw $3 billion in federal grants from the Ivy League school, redirecting those funds toward trade schools instead.
In a Truth Social post, Trump stated, ‘I am considering taking Three Billion Dollars of Grant Money away from a very antisemitic Harvard, and giving it to TRADE SCHOOLS all across our land.
What a great investment that would be for the USA, and so badly needed!!!’
The dispute stems from tensions surrounding on-campus protests, freezes on federal funding, and First Amendment rights.
Last week, the Trump administration took measures to bar Harvard from enrolling foreign students, prompting the university to take legal action, which resulted in a federal judge blocking the administration’s order.
