Uptown Players is set to bring a burst of color and energy to the stage with the opening of Xanadu: The Musical at the Kalita Humphreys Theater this weekend, under the direction of Michael Serrecchia.
The show, which is based on the 1980 cult classic film starring Olivia Newton-John, transforms cinematic storytelling into a vibrant stage production filled with roller skating and classic pop hits from Jeff Lynne and John Farrar.
Serrecchia, who is known for his professionalism and experience, is currently juggling the demands of two simultaneous productions. As April 25 approaches, he prepares to unveil Xanadu before shifting focus to The Sunshine Boys, which opens on May 2 at MainStage in Irving.
“My brain is on overtime, but it’s good to be busy,” Serrecchia commented, reflecting on the whirlwind of rehearsals and creative management.
The challenge of adapting a well-loved film for the stage comes with its own set of obstacles and opportunities, according to Serrecchia. He emphasized that the transition from film to theater is no simple task, as audiences often have expectations rooted in the iconic moments of the original movie.
“It’s not as easy going from film to stage, and so, with that, there is a whole new list of obstacles and opportunities,” he explained. “But also, people will have expectations from the film for those moments. We at least address those.”
Highlighting the unique aspect of Xanadu, Serrecchia revealed that the cast performs on roller skates throughout the show, adding an additional layer of excitement and creativity to the production. “These kids are rolling all over the Kalita,” he exclaimed, illustrating the dynamic choreography that awaits audiences.
Set in the 1980s, Xanadu follows the story of Kira, a Greek muse who descends from Mount Olympus to Venice Beach. Her mission: to inspire struggling artist Sonny to create the first roller disco. However, Kira’s sisters disapprove and intervene, complicating her aspirations and her budding romance with Sonny.
Serrecchia described the musical as pure camp, an embodiment of vibrant and playful storytelling through various theatrical elements. Interestingly, while the show is colorful and fun, he noted, “It’s not, but when you see a lavender cyclops, it will make you think. The camp itself makes up for it.”
In a humorous twist of fate, Serrecchia mentioned that Xanadu: The Musical will be one of two productions hitting the stage within a short timeframe. Just a month after Uptown’s run, Theatre Three will also premiere their version of Xanadu, raising questions about audience proximity and engagement.
“I thought it was odd, and then I wondered if it would be detrimental at first,” he shared on the coincidence. “But now, I think it’s gonna be fun, and perhaps we’ll share audiences on this one! I hope our audience will go see theirs, and I hope the people who plan to see that one will come check ours out.”
For theatergoers keen on experiencing a blend of nostalgia, music, and roller skating magic, Xanadu: The Musical opens on April 24 and runs through May 5.
Tickets can be purchased online at UptownPlayers.org, making it easy for locals to immerse themselves in this lively and unexpected theatrical experience.
As the excitement builds towards opening night, Serrecchia remains focused on delivering a performance that resonates with both the original film’s fans and newcomers alike.
