Miami, FL – South Florida PBS (WPBT, WXEL, and Health Channel) has exciting news for film enthusiasts as it unveils the seventh season of its acclaimed showcase, Film-maker.
The new season premieres on Tuesdays, kicking off on May 27th at 7:30 PM on WPBT2, and continues with broadcasts on Thursdays starting May 29th at 5:30 PM on WXEL.
This season brings together a rich tapestry of narrative and documentary films created by local filmmakers right in South Florida, highlighting the creative talent flourishing in the region.
Dolores Fernandez Alonso, President and CEO of South Florida PBS, expressed her exhilaration regarding the growing filmmaking talent in the area, stating, “Seeing this level of filmmaking talent continuing to grow in our South Florida community is inspiring. We are so pleased to present this diverse slate of films both here in South Florida and on the national stage.”
The season features a total of 11 films presented across five episodes, demonstrating the wide-ranging narratives and styles of South Florida’s creative community.
Among the documentary film winners is “Dirt Therapy,” directed by Sebastian Valencia. This film highlights the experiences of three mountain bikers from Miami—Robert “Doc” Crabtree, Charles “fiftyfoe” Ginther, and Bernard “Frenchy” Riviere—as they reflect on the unpredictable history of Virginia Key’s off-road trails and the community built around mountain biking.
Another noteworthy documentary, “Querido Pequeño Haiti,” directed by Diana Larrea, serves as a heartfelt exploration of Little Haiti, a neighborhood undergoing rapid change due to gentrification. This experimental documentary acts as a love letter to the area through the lens of a Peruvian resident’s personal experiences over the last eight years.
“El Soldador,” directed by Alexandra Martinez, tells the poignant story of a houseless welder who struggles with health issues while receiving care from dedicated doctors at Miami Street Medicine.
Pablo Velho directs “Parodi the Petite Museum,” which chronicles the journey of Paquita Parodi, who began her sewing career at the age of twelve. The documentary illuminates her evolution into a leading expert in vintage fashion restoration.
In “The Purpose,” directed by Dan Abrusci, viewers meet a young music enthusiast born with a disability who transforms his life during a decade spent in prison. Through this journey, he discovers his calling to help at-risk youth, advocating against the mistakes he once made.
“Open Dialogues: Gen QueerZ,” directed by Freddy Rodriguez and produced by Jeff Rusnak, presents the narratives of eight LGBTQ+ South Florida students from Generation Z. This film sheds light on the challenges they face while being part of the first generation to live openly in both school and home environments.
“Roots of Lil Green House,” a docu-short directed by Adrian Turner & Urgent Inc., pays homage to the beginnings of Overtown’s Lil Green House restaurant, showing how it evolved from a local food truck to a beloved dining establishment known for its quality and care in every dish.
Shifting to the narrative film segment, “Las Luces,” directed by Fernanda Lamuño and produced by Vasisth Sukul, takes viewers on an adventure through the Everglades, where three friends seek a mysterious legend but soon find themselves lost in a perplexing reality.
In “Down to Zero,” directed by Joshua Jean-Baptiste, the storyline follows Kyle as he confronts harsh truths about himself from his childhood barber, sparking an introspective journey centered on acceptance.
“Silence in the Dark,” directed by Steven Salgado, tells the gripping tale of a mute woman targeted by a relentless killer after witnessing a brutal crime, marking her frantic efforts for survival.
“Hooky,” directed by Princess Usanga, captures the pivotal moment when high school freshman Nora decides to skip school with her rebellious friend Renee. Set against the backdrop of Miami in 1995, the story explores the challenges of friendship and cultural identity, especially as Nora navigates the pressures of being a second-generation Haitian teenager.
