Andres Torres, known by his stage name Shottie, is making waves in the rap music scene once again with the release of his ninth studio album, ‘Pulp Nonfiction’. Released on April 4th, the album is currently available on Bandcamp and has garnered considerable attention.
Shottie’s journey into music began in his childhood after the death of his father when he was just seven years old. Following that tragedy, his family relocated to Miami, where he developed a passion for writing.
“I’ve always been interested in writing because the words become stories, and you can tell an entire story in a rap song,” Shottie explains. “Through my rap, I connect with other people who feel the same emotions I do. There’s something raw and unapologetic about it that I like.”
Initially, Shottie’s musical career began in the early 2000s as part of a locally popular rap group called IDee4. However, he eventually stepped away from music to explore business opportunities, direct productions, and even publish a coloring book.
Despite his detour, Shottie stayed committed to writing and eventually found himself drawn back to music in 2021, marking the start of what he refers to as his ‘second rap career’. His style epitomizes true East Coast hip hop, characterized as lyrical and grimy but with a positive message infused within.
Shottie believes that much of the underground rap today lacks motivation and often conveys downtrodden messages. In contrast, his music aims to inspire, focusing on themes of family, stability, and hope.
The production of ‘Pulp Nonfiction’ was a collaborative effort from a global collective of music producers known as Lupara. This new approach has provided Shottie with invaluable feedback from different perspectives, enriching the creative process.
“It was a new experience for me because now I was getting feedback from multiple people rather than just one producer, which is what I’m used to,” he shares. “I do the writing, and they throw musical tracks at me; the wide range of feedback from all over the world is incredible.”
The album title itself showcases Shottie’s affinity for film, particularly films by Quentin Tarantino. The playful title ‘Pulp Nonfiction’ reflects his unique storytelling style, melding his love for cinema with his music.
The premiere of the album took place in Miami at Mix Masters Studios, where it received high praise from a sold-out audience. Following its release, ‘Pulp Nonfiction’ is expected to become available on various streaming platforms soon.
Shottie’s previous album, ‘Alligator Alley’, received a warm reception and was sold out through a European vinyl label called Copenhagen Crates in just one day.
Recalling his debut performance, Shottie remembers his clumsy experience with a corded microphone—an amusing yet humbling start to his live career.
Despite the demanding nature of his musical career, Shottie prioritizes family time, raising his five children alongside his artistic endeavors.
To keep up with Shottie’s latest projects and to experience his compelling music, listeners are encouraged to check out ‘Pulp Nonfiction’ available now on Bandcamp.
