The Atlanta Ballet is set to wrap up its 2024-2025 season in Cobb County with an exciting mixed bill titled ‘Catch Tuplet,’ featuring performances that promise to be explosive, athletic, and groundbreaking.
Scheduled for May 9-11, the program will include two return engagements from previous performances: 2019’s ‘Directors Choice’ and 2020’s ‘Heart/Beat.’
The highlight of the evening will be the world premiere of ‘Hypnagogia,’ a piece conceived by the renowned Colombian-Belgian choreographer Annabelle Lopez Ochoa.
According to Atlanta Ballet’s artistic director Gennadi Nedvigin, ‘Hypnagogia’ delves into the unique space between waking and dreaming, evoking a sense of being both present and absent.
Nedvigin describes the work as abstract, allowing for freedom of interpretation from the audience, and he emphasizes that it will feature visually striking elements that have not been seen before.
The inspiration for ‘Hypnagogia’ came to Ochoa during a plane flight where she was captivated by the clouds outside her window, wondering what it might be like to leap into the clouds and be supported by them.
Nedvigin noted that this ethereal vision of floating will be beautifully expressed on stage through the dancers’ movements, which he observed during the creative process in the studio.
He mentioned that collaborating with Ochoa required accommodating flexibility within the ballet’s schedule, as her availability was limited due to prior engagements.
Ochoa had previously worked with the Atlanta dancers during ‘Coco Chanel, the Life of a Fashion Icon,’ which fostered a level of comfort and familiarity that translated well into the new creation.
Nedvigin remarked that the choreography was specifically envisioned with the Atlanta company’s 37 dancers in mind, highlighting the advantage of their previous collaboration.
He expressed pride in having Ochoa contribute new works tailored for the dancers, stating, ‘The entire dance company is very excited. It’s a special experience for them to engage creatively with the choreographer and collaboratively create something fresh.’
In addition to the world premiere, ‘Catch Tuplet’ will also include performances of ‘Catch’ and ‘Tuplet,’ showcasing distinct choreographic styles.
‘Catch,’ created by British choreographer Liam Scarlett, features mesmerizing and fluid movements that highlight the athletic prowess of the dancers.
On the other hand, ‘Tuplet,’ crafted by Swedish choreographer Alexander Ekman, offers a unique and multi-sensory experience, as it allows dancers to use the stage floor and other surfaces as percussion instruments.
Audiences can anticipate an eclectic variety of music and styles throughout the mixed bill, ranging from classical compositions to more contemporary pieces.
‘Catch Tuplet’ performances will occur at the Cobb Energy Performing Arts Centre, with evening shows on Friday, May 9, and Saturday, May 10, at 8 p.m., along with matinee performances scheduled for Saturday, May 10, and Sunday, May 11, at 2 p.m.
