As President Donald Trump reaches the 100-day mark of his presidency, Americans remain deeply divided in their opinions about his performance.
In a recent ABC News/Washington Post/Ipsos poll, leading descriptors of Trump’s presidency ranged from ‘savior’ and ‘patriotic’ to ‘ungodly’ and ‘un-American.’
Evaluating his leadership, respondents have expressed a wide array of sentiments; some hail his efforts as ‘fantastic,’ ‘outstanding,’ and even ‘the best president ever,’ while others decry his actions as ‘chaotic,’ ‘appalling,’ and ‘disastrous.’
According to the poll, Trump’s job approval rating stands at 39%, marking it as the lowest for any president at or near the 100-day mark since 1945, when such data collection began.
The survey allows participants to encapsulate their reactions with a single word, resulting in responses that reflect a spectrum of emotions.
Some respondents voiced their feelings using words like ‘frightened,’ ‘excited,’ ‘happy,’ and ‘devastated.’
Others provided more elaborated statements that underscore their polarized views.
One supporter proclaimed, ‘He’s doing a fantastic job of accomplishing all that we want him to and voted for him to do!’
Conversely, a critic lamented, ‘He’s a horrible con man who thinks he’s a great businessman and he’s tanking the economy.’
Further down the line of discontent, one individual expressed concern over Trump’s apparent overreach, stating, ‘Someone needs to step in and rein him in.’
Among the positive remarks, one approver noted, ‘He doesn’t hesitate to support our best interests and stands strong.’
Yet, concern for vulnerable populations was voiced, with one response alarming over the impact of rising costs on seniors dependent on Social Security.
This discontent is consecutively echoed by more extreme criticism: ‘He is a horrible human being who cares about no one but himself.’
In stark contrast, some responses described Trump as ‘courageously taking fast action’ for the nation’s economic and infrastructure needs.
Such polarized opinions are prevalent among those who disapprove of Trump, often characterized by terms like ‘disgusting,’ ‘chaotic,’ and ‘horrific.’
More severe judgments labeled Trump as ‘dictator,’ ‘fascist,’ and even as a threat with adjectives such as ‘dangerous’ and ‘reckless.’
On the other side of the political spectrum, approving constituents described Trump in more favorable and optimistic tones such as ‘excellent,’ ‘awesome,’ and ‘fantastic.’
Responses from Trump supporters varied, with some expressing optimism while others remained more subdued, using terms like ‘decent,’ ‘alright,’ and ‘mediocre.’
The pace of the Trump administration’s initiatives was also a common theme in responses, with descriptors like ‘fast,’ ‘hasty,’ and ‘rollercoaster’ frequently appearing.
Despite the varying levels of enthusiasm, some respondents felt compelled to compare Trump’s performance to his predecessor, with one remarking, ‘Better than Biden so far.’
Conducted online by Ipsos from April 18-22, 2025, the poll surveyed a random national sample of 2,464 adults.
The partisan breakdown of respondents was relatively balanced with Democrats at 30%, Republicans at 30%, and Independents at 29%.
Furthermore, the poll carries a margin of error of 2 percentage points, although it’s essential to note that sampling error is not the sole factor influencing differences in poll numbers.
Overall, as the nation reflects on the initial days of Trump’s presidency, the reactions encapsulate a broader narrative of division that extends beyond individual opinions to impact national dialogue.
