The newly appointed U.S. ambassador to Israel, Mike Huckabee, has expressed strong outrage towards Britain, France, and Canada for their criticisms of Israel’s current military actions in Gaza.
In a recent interview with NPR, Huckabee stated, “The prolonged suffering for everybody is on Hamas, and I’m outraged that the U.K., Canada, France, they’re blaming the wrong perpetrator.” This statement follows Israel’s intensified military offensive that began on Sunday, which has resulted in significant casualties and humanitarian crises in Gaza.
According to health officials in Gaza, the current operations have led to the deaths of hundreds of Palestinians amid mass evacuations and heightened airstrikes. Meanwhile, under growing international pressure, Israel has started to permit limited aid into the region after a near-total blockade on essential supplies, yet this aid has yet to reach the civilians most in need.
The leaders of the United Kingdom, France, and Canada have jointly condemned the escalation of violence, criticizing Israel’s military actions as “wholly disproportionate” and “egregious.” They also described the aid allowed into Gaza as “wholly inadequate.”
British Foreign Secretary David Lammy announced the suspension of trade talks with Israel as a response to the situation, and the European Union is currently reevaluating its political and economic agreements with the country, according to Kaja Kallas, the EU’s foreign policy chief, who remarked on the catastrophic conditions in Gaza.
Huckabee defended Israel’s actions, making a poignant reference to the Allied bombings during World War II, suggesting that condemning Israel for defending itself from what it perceives as existential threats is hypocritical.
He elaborated, “What a hypocrisy to say that those bombings that ultimately ended World War II and stopped the threat of the Nazis into all of Europe was somehow OK. But if the Israelis, you know, 70 years later, try to defend themselves from an existential threat, that we ought to be mad at them.”
The ongoing conflict has resulted in a tragic toll on Palestinian lives, with Gaza health authorities reporting more than 53,000 fatalities since October 2023.
In light of the ongoing violence, Pope Leo XIV has voiced concern over the situation, labeling it as “worrying and painful,” and has called for an end to hostilities, stressing that the vulnerable populations such as children, the elderly, and the sick are paying the highest price.
In relation to U.S. foreign policy, Huckabee addressed recent media speculations regarding President Trump’s frustrations with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu concerning the renewed military offensive in Gaza.
He clarified, “I think he’s more frustrated with Hamas. I don’t see the frustration with the prime minister, and I’ve talked to the president, I’ve talked to the vice president, talked to the secretary of state.” Huckabee’s insights reflect the administration’s stance amidst a complex and rapidly evolving geopolitical landscape.
