As Memorial Day approaches, communities across metro Atlanta and North Georgia are gearing up to honor the brave men and women who made the ultimate sacrifice in service to their nation.
A variety of ceremonies and events have been scheduled, providing opportunities for residents to pay tribute to fallen service members in meaningful ways.
In Acworth, the Memorial Day Ceremony is set to commence at 10 a.m. on May 24 at Cauble Park, specifically at Patriots Point. Veterans and current servicemen will lead the tribute to those who fought and died for their country.
Alpharetta will host a solemn Memorial Day Tribute from 9 a.m. until 10:15 a.m. at Alpharetta City Hall. This gathering will include an invocation, the National Anthem, the Pledge of Allegiance, and a keynote address by Dr. Rick McCormick, concluding with the playing of “Taps.”
Blairsville’s annual Memorial Day Parade, scheduled to start at 10:30 a.m. on May 24, will focus on honoring Korean War Veterans, in keeping with this year’s theme.
Over in Blue Ridge, residents can attend the Fannin County Veterans Memorial Park Ceremony at 11 a.m. on May 26. The North Georgia Honor Guard will lead this event, featuring a rifle salute, the posting of colors, wreath placements, and a performance of the National Anthem. Following the ceremony, a cookout will be held at the Vet Center.
Conyers will begin its Walk of Heroes Memorial Day Ceremony at 11 a.m. at the Walk of Heroes Veterans War Memorial, located on Black Shoals Road. Retired US Army Captain Tommy Clark is set to deliver the keynote address.
In Covington, ceremonies will kick off at 10 a.m. in Covington Square, hosted by Covington American Legion Auxiliary Unit 32. Residents are encouraged to join in honoring their local heroes.
The Georgia National Cemetery in Canton is hosting a notable Memorial Day Remembrance Ceremony, beginning at 10 a.m. on May 24. Flag placement will start an hour earlier, at 9 a.m. Major General Dwayne Wilson of the Georgia Army National Guard will preside over the event, which will also include an honor guard, a rifle salute, and the playing of “Taps.”
Dacula is preparing for its 31st annual Memorial Day Parade, which will begin at 10 a.m. on May 26. The procession will start at Hebron Baptist Church and make its way to Dacula High School. Prior to the parade, the community will gather for the National Anthem and a Memorial Day message at approximately 9:30 a.m. This year’s grand marshal will be 102-year-old WWII veteran James L. Davis, and the theme is “They Answered the Call, They Paid the Price.”
Dunwoody residents can participate in the annual Brook Run Park Memorial Day Ceremony, which starts at 10 a.m. at the Veterans Memorial in Brook Run Park, located at 4770 North Peachtree Road. The event will feature the Georgia State Defense Force Band, keynote speaker Major Rick Scheff, and other guest speakers, along with a wreath-laying tribute.
Lawrenceville will welcome community members to the Gwinnett Fallen Heroes Memorial on Langley Drive for a Memorial Day Ceremony at 1 p.m. on May 26. Brigadier General Theodore Scott, commanding general of the Georgia Army National Guard’s Marietta-based 78th Troop Command, will give the keynote remarks during the occasion.
Marietta’s National Cemetery Ceremony will take place at 12 p.m. on May 26 at 500 Washington Avenue NE. The event, organized by the National Memorial Day Association of Georgia and The Avenue of Flags, Inc., will feature patriotic music and a formal wreath-laying ceremony to honor those who served.
Norcross plans to hold a Memorial Day Remembrance event from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Thrasher Park. Residents are invited to come together to pay tribute to those who have served the country, with heartfelt remarks from Mayor Newton and a moving bagpipe performance.
Peachtree City is conducting its Memorial Day Ceremony at 10 a.m. at the City Hall Fountain on Willowbend Road.
Recognized as Georgia’s largest Memorial Day ceremony, Roswell Remembers will take place at the Faces of War Memorial. The formal program will specifically honor Vietnam War veterans and their families. Attendees can look forward to music by the Roswell New Horizons Band, the presentation of colors, the singing of the national anthem, the Pledge of Allegiance, a POW/MIA tribute, and the somber laying of the wreath. Col. (Retired) Carl Hamilton (Skip) Bell from Marietta will serve as the guest speaker for this event.
Snellville will host its Memorial Day program at 4 p.m. on May 24 at the Veterans Memorial. The Gwinnett Community Band will provide patriotic music, and Commissioner Jasper Watkins will be the keynote speaker, with participation from the Button Gwinnett Chapter Color Guard and Militia.
Senoia plans for a festive celebration featuring fireworks, live music, food, and other activities starting at 5 p.m. on May 24, providing a lively way to honor Memorial Day.
The City of Sugar Hill will conduct a Memorial Day Ceremony at 10:30 a.m. on May 26 in front of the Veterans Memorial on West Broad Street.
In addition to these ceremonies, several community events have also been scheduled.
Suwanee Town Center will host the annual Red, White, Bluegrass & Bach event at 4 p.m. on May 24. The festivities will include food trucks, a musical salute, performances by the Main Street Symphony Orchestra, and the Wiseman Brothers, along with a visit from Fort Moore’s Silver Wings Exhibition Team, contingent on weather conditions. Admission is free.
An engaging North Georgia Winds Memorial Day Weekend Family Concert will take place at Seckinger High School in Buford at 4 p.m. on May 25, offering a free experience for families.
At Historic Oakland Cemetery, a special Veterans Tour will share the stories of veterans from the Mexican-American War and the Korean War. The tour is scheduled to begin at 11 a.m. on May 25, giving attendees insight into history.
Fort Morris State Historic Site & Museum in Midway will offer a Memorial Day commemoration from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on May 24. The event will include hourly demonstrations of musket firing by American Revolutionary soldiers, as well as hands-on activities involving wool spinning and weaving.
A special march, the Shepherd’s Men 12-mile Tribute, will commence at 8 a.m. on May 26 in Canton. Starting at Reformation Brewery and concluding at the same venue in Woodstock, this march involves active-duty, medically retired, and honorably discharged servicemen and civilian supporters carrying tribute barrels. The march serves to honor fallen soldiers and raise awareness about the challenges that veterans face, including PTSD and traumatic brain injuries.
Restaurants across the area are also celebrating Memorial Day with specials and events.
TWO urban licks will host a one-night-only Memorial Day weekend event on Sunday, May 25, starting at 6 p.m. Their event, called Sunday Supper: Beltline BBQ, will feature a fire-roasted whole pig, classic barbecue sides, and TWO’s signature bourbon cocktail in a lively, family-style setting. The price is $45 per person, not including tax and gratuity, with reservations suggested.
Sweet Auburn Barbecue is ready to cater your Memorial Day gatherings with two convenient packages. The $60 Memorial Day Wing Kit, featuring two dozen brined, smoked, and seasoned jumbo wings along with sides and sweet tea, is perfect for grilling, while the $75 BBQ Kit comes ready-to-eat and includes pulled pork, pulled chicken, barbecue sauce, sides, and Texas toast. Orders will close on Sunday, May 25, at 3 p.m. for pickup from May 22 to 26 at 656 N. Highland Ave NE.
Cattle Shed Wine & Steak Bar will remain open for regular hours on Monday, May 26, featuring holiday chef-driven brunch specials alongside its full menu.
HOBNOB Neighborhood Tavern is also welcoming guests on Memorial Day, serving brunch specials alongside an array of menu items in a friendly tavern atmosphere.
Milton’s Cuisine & Cocktails will offer Memorial Day specials, such as half-priced filet, a watermelon feta salad, and warm peach cobbler with vanilla ice cream. Reservations can be made via OpenTable.
Ocean & Acre will be hosting its new brunch during the Memorial Day weekend with live music scheduled on Sunday. The venue will also offer an extended happy hour on Monday from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m., featuring $2 oysters and a BBQ baby back ribs special.
