A fatal shooting outside the Capital Jewish Museum in Washington, D.C., claimed the lives of two Israeli embassy staff members on Wednesday night, creating shockwaves across the community and beyond.
The victims, a man and woman who were attending an event at the museum, were shot at close range as they exited the venue.
D.C. Police Chief Pamela Smith confirmed that the two individuals were found unresponsive at the scene shortly after emergency services received calls reporting the shooting around 9:08 p.m.
Despite at least one of the victims being critical upon arrival at a local hospital, they succumbed to their injuries, prompting widespread mourning.
An Israeli Embassy spokesperson, Tal Naim Cohen, expressed the embassy’s confidence in local and federal law enforcement to apprehend the shooter and ensure safety for Israel’s representatives and Jewish communities across the United States.
Authorities promptly arrested 30-year-old Elias Rodriguez from Chicago, who was taken into custody at the scene.
After being apprehended, Rodriguez reportedly chanted, “Free, Free Palestine,” as he was being led away by police.
D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser addressed the media shortly after the incident, declaring, “We will not tolerate violence or hate in our city.”
She further emphasized the community’s strength in confronting terrorism and anti-Semitism.
In the aftermath of the shooting, the Israeli ambassador to the U.S., Yechiel Leiter, revealed that the couple targeted were planning to become engaged.
He stated that the young man had purchased a ring just this week with the intention to propose in Jerusalem.
This tragic loss has deeply affected the community, with many expressing their condolences to the victims’ families.
Ted Deutch, CEO of the American Jewish Committee, denounced the violence stating, “We are devastated that an unspeakable act of violence took place outside the venue,” as they awaited further information from law enforcement.
United States Attorney General Pam Bondi, who was quick to respond to the scene of the shooting, shared her prayers for the victims on social media, stating that they were working diligently to gather more information on the incident.
The FBI also had a presence at the scene, collaborating with Metropolitan Police to investigate the shooting.
Ben Williamson, a spokesperson for the FBI, confirmed their active involvement and promised to provide updates as details emerged.
In a disturbing twist, the perpetrator allegedly provided information on where he had discarded the firearm used in the attack, leading police to recover the weapon shortly after detaining him.
Danny Danon, the Israeli ambassador to the United Nations, labeled the shooting a “depraved act of anti-Semitic terrorism,” adding, “Harming diplomats and the Jewish community is crossing a red line.”
Secretary of Homeland Security Kristi Noem also expressed her concerns on social media, stating, “We are actively investigating and working to get more information to share. Please pray for the families of the victims. We will bring this depraved perpetrator to justice.”
As the community mourns, the incident underscores the ongoing tensions and threats faced by representatives of the Israeli government and the Jewish community at large in the United States.
In a time when such violent acts against diplomatic personnel are rising, leaders emphasize the need to combat anti-Semitism and stand united against all forms of hate.
As investigations continue, officials and community leaders urge vigilance and solidarity in ensuring the safety and security of all.
The nation watches closely as law enforcement works to bring justice for the victims and their families.
