The United States has commenced the relocation of its B-2 stealth bombers to Guam, a crucial strategic point in the Pacific, amidst escalating tensions in West Asia and speculations of potential US involvement in Israel’s military efforts against Iran.
According to two US officials who spoke with Reuters, the transfer of these long-range bombers has started, although it is unclear if this move is directly connected to the intensifying conflict in the region. Analysts and defense experts have raised questions regarding the timing of this deployment.
This relocation coincides with comments from Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian, who has affirmed Iran’s commitment to its nuclear ambitions, stating that nuclear activities will continue “under any circumstances.” This announcement follows a series of intensified Israeli strikes and growing pressure on Iran’s regional proxies.
In Yemen, Iran-backed Houthi rebels have issued a warning about an impending wave of attacks on American vessels in the Red Sea should the US formally engage in the conflict. Houthi spokesperson Brigadier General Yahya Saree indicated that their operations would escalate if the US entered the war.
The B-2 bomber is recognized as one of America’s most sophisticated strategic assets, capable of deploying the 30,000-pound GBU-57 Massive Ordnance Penetrator—a weapon specifically engineered to target deeply buried facilities. The current deployment of these bombers could be part of contingency planning aimed at potential strikes against fortified Iranian nuclear sites, such as the Fordow facility.
Although the Pentagon has yet to comment on this development, the movement of the bombers contributes to a series of recent military adjustments. This includes the repositioning of tanker aircraft and fighter jets, which indicate Washington’s efforts to brace for possible regional escalations.
President Donald Trump has not yet announced the United States’ military support for Israel, but the repositioning of high-value assets like the B-2 suggests that Washington is preparing to keep its options open should the conflict escalate further.
The intent behind this maneuver—a deterrent strategy or an indication of more profound involvement—remains uncertain. Nevertheless, the strategic signal to Tehran and its allies is clear.
Details surrounding the number of bombers involved and the operational specifics have not been disclosed, as the officials provided the information under the condition of anonymity. One official mentioned that there are no current directives for the aircraft to proceed beyond Guam.
Military experts and officials are now observing whether the B-2 bombers may eventually be deployed to Diego Garcia, a US-British military base in the Indian Ocean, which experts consider perfectly positioned for operations in West Asia.
This month, the United States had previously stationed B-2 bombers on Diego Garcia, replacing them with B-52 bombers.
In related developments, Israel reported the death of a senior Iranian commander amid ongoing hostilities stemming from the prolonged air war, while Tehran maintains it will not engage in nuclear negotiations under threat.
While Israel argues that Iran is close to having nuclear weapon capabilities, Iran insists that its nuclear program is strictly for peaceful objectives.
President Donald Trump noted that he would take up to two weeks to decide on possible US military involvement alongside Israel, allowing time to assess the situation.
This week, Reuters first reported the relocation of a significant number of tanker aircraft to Europe along with other military assets deployed to West Asia, which includes the deployment of more fighter jets. Additionally, an aircraft carrier in the Indo-Pacific is heading towards West Asia.
