As Memorial Day weekend approaches, many in the Bay Area are preparing to celebrate the unofficial start of summer while honoring the sacrifices of fallen heroes.
This three-day weekend is filled with a variety of events that cater to different interests across the region.
One of the marquee events is the Memorial Day Commemoration at the Presidio, taking place on May 26.
Beginning at 10:30 a.m. at the San Francisco National Cemetery, the United States Department of Veterans Affairs will lead a ceremony that features noteworthy speakers, a 24-gun salute, and musical performances.
The ceremonial proceedings will last until 11:20 a.m., after which attendees can enjoy a meditative organ concert at the Interfaith Chapel nearby, starting at 12:15 p.m.
For those looking to honor the day aboard a historic vessel, the USS Hornet Museum in Alameda will host its own Memorial Day Commemoration.
On May 26 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., guests can look forward to a wreath-laying ceremony, special guest speakers, and exciting flyovers by the Memorial Squadron.
Tickets for adults are priced at $25, while veterans can gain entry free of charge.
While many events focus on commemoration, the Memorial Day weekend also serves as a vibrant kickoff to summer festivities.
In Napa, the highly anticipated BottleRock Napa Valley music festival takes place from May 23 to May 25, with headliners such as Noah Kahan and Khruangbin closing out the event on Sunday.
The festival is set to draw over 120,000 attendees, showcasing local food, drinks, and a diverse lineup of musical talent.
Meanwhile, the Carnaval San Francisco, held in the Mission District, celebrates cultural vibrancy on May 24 and May 25.
As the largest multi-cultural event on the West Coast, the festival spans 17 blocks and features performances from 50 local artists, as well as 400 vendors.
A highlight of this year’s Carnaval is the Grand Parade set to occur on Sunday.
Art enthusiasts won’t want to miss the Point Reyes Open Studios event, where artists will open their studios to the public from May 24 to May 26, running from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. each day.
Visitors can engage with sculptors, photographers, jewelers, and a variety of other artisans during this free community event.
Families looking for activities can enjoy the KIDDO! Memorial Day Carnival taking place at Mill Valley Middle School and the Mill Valley Community Center from May 24 to May 26, beginning at noon each day.
This carnival features rides and games on Saturday and Sunday, culminating with a free concert, food, and beverages during the Day on the Green on Monday.
All proceeds from the carnival support arts education in public schools, making attendance impactful in more ways than one.
Finally, those interested in experiencing Greek culture can visit the Marin Greek Festival on May 24 and May 25, which offers a weekend full of festivities including live music from the Kymata Band, authentic Greek food, and exciting cultural activities.
The festival will run from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. on May 24 and from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. on May 25, providing ample opportunity to revel in the cultural offerings.
