Mayor Michelle Wu, alongside the City of Boston’s Environment Department, has announced the first round of awardees for the Equitable Emissions Investment Fund (EEIF), totaling $750,250.
These funds are designated for building decarbonization projects within affordable housing, aiming to tackle both greenhouse gas emissions and the disproportionate impacts of air pollution faced by specific communities.
The awardees for this initial funding round include the Codman Square Neighborhood Development Corporation, the Dorchester Bay Economic Development Corporation, and the Fenway Community Development Corporation.
The EEIF, established under the Building Emissions Reduction and Disclosure Ordinance (BERDO), serves as a financial source for implementing and administering local building-carbon abatement projects.
Seeded with $3.5 million from the City’s operating budget, the fund focuses on projects that benefit Environmental Justice neighborhoods as part of an effort to equitably advance toward Boston’s emission reduction goals.
Mayor Michelle Wu emphasized the importance of initiatives like the EEIF in reaching net-zero emissions by 2050.
“These grants reflect our focus on creating a healthier, more equitable city, prioritizing investments in communities that are most affected by the impacts of climate change,” she stated.
After a thorough review process, the three projects selected for funding include diverse strategies to support low-income tenants and combat climate change.
The Codman Square Neighborhood Development Corporation will receive $255,000 for its project titled “Advancing Building Decarbonization at Washington Columbia I and II.”
This funding will be utilized to develop comprehensive decarbonization plans for two affordable housing developments, ultimately benefiting low-income residents.
Additionally, the Dorchester Bay Economic Development Corporation has been awarded $250,000 for their
