In a devastating turn of events, actor Tray Chaney, known for his role in HBO’s ‘The Wire’, experienced a harrowing ordeal along with his 18-year-old son, Malachi, when an EF-2 tornado struck their home in Locust Grove, Georgia, on Thursday afternoon.
Officials from the National Weather Service reported that the tornado, packing winds of up to 135 mph, traversed a path of 1.82 miles with a width of 200 yards through Henry County.
Initially forming northeast of Luella, the tornado cut a destructive path toward Blacksville, wreaking havoc along the way.
Following the disaster, Chaney took to Instagram to share updates about his son’s condition, revealing that Malachi was found 300 feet away from their home amid the wreckage.
“I can’t get myself together right now,” Chaney expressed, visibly shaken in a video showing the destruction surrounding him.
In one of his posts, Chaney recounted the terrifying moments as the tornado approached. He described being trapped under the debris of his house, which had collapsed on top of him, leaving him unconscious and with a knot on his head, while he struggled to call out for his son.
With community support, Malachi was located in a nearby wood line and is currently in intensive care. His father is relieved that the swelling on Malachi’s face is finally beginning to subside after the harrowing event.
Chaney emphasized the emotional toll of the incident, stating, “This is going to be a very long journey to recovery.”
He expressed gratitude for the prayers and love they have received from the community, acknowledging that they would require professional therapy to cope with the aftermath of the trauma.
In a poignant statement, Chaney urged others to cherish their loved ones, saying, “Please cherish life. Hug your loved ones now. Life just changed for me and mine. We’ll never be the same.”
Reflecting on the loss, Chaney lamented the destruction of the home he built just five years prior. The only item he managed to salvage from their residence was his cell phone amidst the chaos.
The father and son had been enjoying a routine morning together just hours before the tornado hit, participating in a radio interview on ‘The Big Tigger Morning Show’.
By mid-afternoon, their lives had taken a tragic turn as they faced the aftermath of the natural disaster.
Chaney’s heartfelt message resonated, illustrating the fragility of life as he acknowledged the difficulty of coping with such sudden loss and changed circumstances.
As the Chaney family navigates this trying time, they remain hopeful for recovery and healing, bolstered by the love and support from their community.
The incident serves as a stark reminder of the power of nature and the importance of valuing life and family during uncertain times.
