ATLANTA, GA — After experiencing a pair of sunny days, Georgia is bracing for another wave of storms as weather officials predict increasing rain chances in the coming days.
Meteorologist Lindsay Marlow from the National Weather Service (NWS) indicated that a low-pressure system is making its way northeast from the East Coast and into the Carolinas, potentially bringing significant moisture to Georgia on Wednesday and Thursday.
While the rain will have started, the weekend poses a greater threat as an approaching front could lead to the development of severe storms, according to Marlow.
In metro Atlanta and surrounding areas, patchy showers and isolated thunderstorms are likely after 1 p.m. Wednesday.
Marlow noted that the highest probability for rain would be late Wednesday afternoon and evening, with conditions expected to clear by nightfall.
Currently, there is no severe weather anticipated for Wednesday; however, the NWS Storm Prediction Center has indicated that some of the showers could develop into thunderstorms.
Looking ahead, weather officials expect storm activity daily through at least Tuesday, with the most severe weather possible on Friday into Saturday.
The NWS has projected a Level 2 out of 5 slight risk for severe weather, which could include damaging wind gusts and isolated large hail.
Marlow explained that whether storms maintain their strength into northwest Georgia will impact the severity of any potential issues.
Such storm activity is not unfamiliar for the state, especially during the spring months.
Marlow highlighted that Georgia typically experiences its peak severe weather season between March and May, with storm activity sometimes extending into June when development patterns support such events.
This spring has already seen severe weather, including an EF-2 tornado that recently injured actor Tray Chaney from “The Wire” along with his son.
As storm systems progress, updates will be disseminated through the NWS’ social media channels and their official website.
