Celebrating 45 Years of Music: The 9:30 Club and The Atlantis Unite Through Photography and History

The 9:30 Club, a beloved music venue in Washington, D.C., has reached a significant milestone, celebrating 45 years since its opening on May 30, 1980.

With a legacy that boasts more than 11,000 artists and nearly 8 million fans, the venue has become a cornerstone of the music scene, providing countless nights of memorable performances and unforgettable experiences.

Among those who have diligently captured the essence of this iconic venue is photographer Jim Saah, whose journey with the 9:30 Club dates back to its original location.

Saah first photographed a show at the original 9:30 Club on October 17, 1982, and his work has become synonymous with the club’s rich history.

Reflecting on that era, Saah remarked, “After sundown, ’80s D.C. belonged to the punks and outsiders.

The music and community were intoxicating, and the 9:30 Club was home base for it all.

I must’ve photographed hundreds of shows there.

I love experiencing the music while making visual art from it.

I was more tuned into the whole scene through documenting it.

It made me feel alive.”

Saah’s passion for photography and music has continued at The Atlantis, a near replica of the original 9:30 Club that was launched with an inaugural run of shows starting on May 30, 2023, led by Foo Fighters.

“The Atlantis shines through it all, showing the spirit of the old 9:30 alive and well here,” Saah said, highlighting the significance of the new venue while maintaining a connection to the past.

In conjunction with this celebration, The Atlantis is hosting a photography exhibition titled “44x44x44,” showcasing Saah’s work.

The exhibit features a single iconic photograph from each of the venue’s first 44 shows, creating a visual tribute to 44 years of history at the 9:30 Club.

Jim captured every one of those shows, except for three, which were photographed by Ben Eisendrath, a D.C. photojournalist and I.M.P. house photographer.

This summer, music fans will have a unique opportunity to explore the backstage of The Atlantis during two public viewings of the “44x44x44” exhibit.

Scheduled for June 26 and July 13, these viewings will give guests exclusive access to the venue’s dressing rooms, limited-edition 45th-anniversary merchandise, and a chance to enjoy a drink while being transported back to the 9th & F St. NW circa 1980 via The Atlantis’ rooftop recreation.

RSVPs will be on a first-come, first-served basis, and interested attendees can sign up for these special events online.

In addition, those who can’t wait for the public viewings can sign up for I.M.P.’s free loyalty program, Friends with Benefits, which offers an exclusive chance to RSVP for a special viewing on June 18.

Members of the loyalty program receive numerous perks, including free shipping on online merchandise orders, access to exclusive pre-sales, loyalty points eligible for ticket and merchandise exchanges, and a complimentary 9:30 Cupcake on their birthday.

As part of its 45th-anniversary celebration, the 9:30 Club is also reissuing and expanding its cherished coffee table book, “9:30 – A Time and a Place.”

This sought-after edition features more than 100 additional pages, chronicling the full-circle creation of The Atlantis alongside exclusive photos and messages from artists who participated in the grand opening series of 44 shows.

The updated book includes a complete chronological listing of every show ever played at the 9:30 Club, a detail fans have eagerly awaited since the first edition’s release.

Additionally, a memorial page pays tribute to the late Shawn “Gus” Vitale, the club’s esteemed lead sound engineer, featuring a heartfelt tribute written by Ian MacKaye of Fugazi and Dischord Records.

As the 9:30 Club celebrates its legacy and prepares for a new chapter with The Atlantis, the spirit of music and community continues to thrive, ensuring that the history and memories created within its walls will live on for years to come.
