As summer approaches, concerns mount regarding the potential impacts of recent sargassum blooms on Southeast Florida beaches.
This year, a bulletin from the University of South Florida indicates an alarming estimated total of 37.5 million metric tons of sargassum, setting a new record that is over 40% higher than that of June 2022.
The report suggests that current regional totals for May have surpassed levels seen in previous years, and the forecast predicts these numbers may continue to rise in June and July.
Currents are expected to drive this seaweed bloom towards the Gulf of Mexico, prompting worries for beachgoers.
However, it remains too early to determine the exact impact on specific areas like Key Biscayne and Miami Beach.
Dr. Chuanmin Hu from the University of South Florida’s Sargassum Watch System expressed cautious optimism, stating, “It’s too early to say, and it appears unlikely, that [Southeastern] Florida will also receive a record-high amount of Sargassum.
