**Today’s Big Stories**
**1. Hirono, Schatz Condemn Padilla Removal, Detention**
U.S. Senators Mazie Hirono and Brian Schatz, both from Hawaii, have strongly condemned the recent forcible removal and detention of their Senate colleague, Alex Padilla, a Democrat from California.
The incident unfolded during a U.S. Department of Homeland Security news conference in Los Angeles.
Describing the event as “sickening,” Senator Hirono expressed her outrage on the social media platform X, stating, “This is what authoritarians do. None of us is safe from this regime.”
Footage of the event circulating online shows Padilla already present in the room, trying to identify himself and pose a question to Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem.
Suddenly, three Secret Service agents approach him, physically removing him from the venue and forcing him to the ground to be handcuffed.
As the incident unfolds, another agent blocks the view of the camera recording the encounter with his body.
Noem attended the conference to discuss the deployment of National Guard and U.S. Marine personnel to Los Angeles, which the Trump administration deems a necessary federal intervention in response to protests against ICE and to safeguard federal property.
Amidst the incident, the Department of Homeland Security inaccurately claimed that Padilla did not identify himself and suggested that the Secret Service acted in response to Padilla’s alleged threatening behavior.
DHS stated on their official X account, “Senator Padilla chose disrespectful political theatre and interrupted a live press conference without identifying himself or having his Senate security pin on as he lunged toward Secretary Noem.”
Conversely, Senator Schatz addressed the Senate floor, countering the notion that Padilla’s behavior warranted his detention.
He underscored the notion that “being disrespectful is legal,” emphasizing that such actions are inherently American.
“This is the stuff of dictatorships,” Schatz asserted, expressing concern that fellow Republicans remained silent on the issue.
He added that Padilla is entitled to express his responsibilities as a senator, protected by the Constitution’s Speech and Debate Clauses and a federal statute allowing oversight of immigration facilities.
**2. Unannounced Test Alert Sent to Everyone in Hawaii**
This morning at 11:03 a.m., residents across Hawaii received a loud “emergency alert test” on their phones.
The Hawaii Emergency Management Agency (HIEMA) initiated the test to ensure the performance of emergency communication systems.
In a release issued an hour later, HIEMA explained, “This test is a routine procedure designed to ensure that our emergency communication systems are functioning properly and can effectively provide critical information during actual emergencies.
