SAN JOSE, Calif. — In a much-needed turnaround, the U.S. national soccer team clinched a resounding 5-0 victory over Trinidad and Tobago on Sunday, marking their opening match of the CONCACAF Gold Cup.
This win comes after the Americans faced their longest losing streak since 2007, igniting hope among fans and players alike.
Malik Tillman was a standout performer, netting two goals, while Diego Luna contributed significantly with two assists, as the U.S. aimed to regain momentum in international play.
“It was really important to start the competition with a good feeling, to cut a little bit this negativity,” U.S. coach Mauricio Pochettino reflected after the match.
The victory not only snapped a four-game losing streak but also alleviated some of the tension that had surrounded the team in recent days, particularly regarding star player Christian Pulisic’s decision to rest during the Gold Cup and Pochettino’s decision to exclude him from a couple of pre-tournament friendlies.
Tillman struck first in the 16th minute, taking advantage of a defensive error by Alvin Jones, showing his scoring prowess with another goal in the 41st minute.
In between Tillman’s goals, Patrick Agyemang added to the scoreline with a deflected shot just before halftime, making it 3-0 after Luna’s shot took a fortunate bounce off a defender.
“I think we played a great game, and it was nice to bounce back,” Tillman remarked about the team’s response.
Brenden Aaronson and Haji Wright rounded out the victory, scoring in quick succession in the 82nd and 83rd minutes, respectively.
Despite the one-sided scoreline, the attendance at PayPal Park in San Jose was just 12,610.
Coach Pochettino praised Tillman’s development, acknowledging the budding relationship between the player and coaching staff.
“Malik is a talented player. It’s obvious to everyone,” Pochettino stated, reflecting on his early experiences with the team.
Luna, who had an impressive debut back in January, especially after playing through injury, cherished the opportunity to play in his hometown.
“Just an honor, right, to be able to dream about this day,” Luna expressed.
He played a crucial role, first assisting Tillman’s second goal before scoring his own that added to the U.S. lead. Pochettino commended Luna’s resolve and commitment on the field.
The Americans have a solid history in the Gold Cup, having won their group in 16 of 17 editions, with only one second-place finish in 2011.
With this victory, they enhanced their group stage record to 41 wins, one loss, and five draws.
Looking ahead, the U.S. will face invited guest Saudi Arabia in Austin, Texas, on Thursday, followed by their final group stage match against Haiti on June 22 in Arlington, Texas.
In a tactical move, Matt Freese started as goalkeeper in place of Matt Turner, who had been in goal for 14 consecutive competitive matches.
Pochettino aims to foster competition within the squad, noting Turner’s understanding of the decision despite his disappointment.
Overall, the U.S. team appears to be bouncing back after a tough stretch, showcasing promising talent and teamwork as they progress in the tournament.
