Last July, the Philadelphia Historic District introduced a new tradition known as the Red, White & Blue To-Do celebration, a vibrant event designed to honor the historical significance of Independence Day in the birthplace of the United States.
Inspired by a famous phrase from John Adams in 1776, this inaugural celebration aims to encourage both locals and visitors to partake in the festivities that highlight Philadelphia’s rich legacy.
Vince Stango, Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer of the National Constitution Center, expressed the event’s importance during last year’s press conference: “Red, White, & Blue To-Do highlights the significance of Philadelphia’s historical landmarks and institutions—it’s a testament to our shared commitment to preserving and promoting our legacy as the birthplace of our nation.”
Set for Wednesday, July 2, the festivities will commence with a flag raising ceremony at the Betsy Ross House, led by an actress portraying Betsy Ross herself.
The parade will follow shortly after, starting at 11 a.m. from the National Constitution Center located at 525 Arch St.
Participants can expect a colorful procession through the heart of the city, traveling along Independence Mall, and concluding at 3rd Street.
The parade is set to feature 13 whimsical floats adorned with local icons as well as a variety of drill teams and cultural dance troupes.
These floats will pay tribute to historic sites such as Carpenter’s Hall, Independence Hall, and Martha Washington’s Rose Garden, weaving in the patriotic themes of the American Eagle, stars, stripes, and flags.
Entertainment also plays a significant role in the day’s activities, with performances scheduled from the National Park Service Color Guard of Pennsylvania, the West Powelton Drumline, and the United States Naval Sea Cadet Corps, among others.
A full schedule and additional details about the performances will be made available online.
In conjunction with the parade, the Red, White & Blue To-Do will host an All-American Block Party from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.
This lively event will transform 3rd Street between Chestnut and Walnut streets into a hub of cultural engagement, featuring games, family-friendly activities, and highlights from historic attractions.
Food trucks will be on-site to ensure that no one goes hungry during the day’s events, while musical performances will resonate throughout eight designated locations in the district from 2 to 6 p.m.
These venues will include renowned sites like the Betsy Ross House, Carpenters’ Hall, and the African American Museum in Philadelphia.
Participating acts will feature DJ Sophia, Dance for Life, and the 78th Army Field Band, contributing to the festive atmosphere.
Local businesses in Old City will also join in the celebration by hosting unique activations, providing a peek into the science of fireworks at the Science History Institute, a scavenger hunt at the Arch Street Meeting House, colonial games at the Independence National Historical Trust, and candle-making at the Historic St. George’s Museum & Archives.
Additional themed celebrations can be found at venues such as Liberty Beer Garden.
For those who want to indulge in their creativity, Decoration Stations will be available at multiple Historic District attractions, supplying festive gear for visitors.
To enhance the holiday spirit, the district will be adorned with bunting, balloons, and begonias.
A special issue of the Historic Philadelphia Gazette will be distributed at the Independence Visitor Center and partner attractions, containing a map and details on how to engage in the celebration.
As the day progresses, the neighborhood will also feature various Happy Hour specials at participating locations from 4 to 7 p.m.
The celebration will culminate with a patriotic performance by the United States Army Field Band during Wawa Welcome America’s Salute to Service.
The grand finale will showcase a tribute to Soldiers and Veterans featuring the Grammy-nominated musical duo, The War And Treaty.
This concert will be held at the Independence Concert Series Stage, presented by Visit Philadelphia, located at Independence Mall (6th & Market streets).
