Chef Elijah Milligan is set to unveil his first restaurant, Lovechild, in the former location of The Lucky Well at 990 Spring Garden St. this fall.
With a career shaped by esteemed restaurants across the country, Milligan plans to showcase a diverse menu that draws heavily from Japanese and Mexican influences.
Guests can expect many unique offerings prepared using Milligan’s Argentinian wood-fired grill, which will enhance the flavor profiles of various dishes.
The menu is designed to be eclectic, featuring a packed raw bar complete with fresh raw fish options, a selection of shareable plates, vibrant vegetable dishes, house-made pasta, and carefully selected cuts of meat and fish.
As for dessert lovers, all sweets will be made in-house, promising a delightful conclusion to any meal.
The bar at Lovechild will also feature an impressive array of options, boasting 3 to 4 rotating clarified cocktails each month.
This cocktail clarification process removes impurities, resulting in a smoother flavor and a visually appealing drink.
Milligan is committed to sourcing much of the restaurant’s ingredients locally, although he plans to offer an extensive wine selection that highlights California and European vintages.
The name Lovechild reflects a profoundly personal connection for Milligan, who was raised by a single mother and is now a single father himself.
“I want this to be both a neighborhood gem and a destination. This is a project I’ve wanted to sink my teeth into for a long time,” notes Milligan, who is 35.
“I knew it was going to be named Lovechild, and I wanted to incorporate a variety of cuisines that I love into one menu.
I have learned so much from some really incredible chefs, and I’m ready to create something memorable in a city that I truly love.”
Milligan’s culinary journey traces back to his roots in Philadelphia, where he honed his skills in kitchens around the city.
His early influences include his mother and step-father, who operated a soul food restaurant, and his training at J&A Culinary Institute in South Philadelphia.
Before returning to Philly, Milligan also showcased his talents at prestigious restaurants such as Atelier Crenn and Petit Crenn in San Francisco, as well as Bottega in Yountville.
Upon his return, he initiated a pop-up dinner series titled Cooking for the Culture, which celebrated chefs of color within the city and contributed to various culinary projects as an executive and consulting chef.
The design for Lovechild, crafted by Durell Bottoms, who has experience with projects like Ardiente, will encapsulate a 1970s vibe.
The spacious 3,500-square-foot restaurant will accommodate between 85 to 130 patrons, featuring a dining room, a 20-seat chef’s counter, bar seating, and window spots.
The interior will be enhanced by fresh flowers, velvet upholstery, and ambient light fixtures, creating a welcoming atmosphere for guests.
As Milligan prepares to launch Lovechild, excitement builds for what promises to be a culinary gem in Philadelphia, offering a creative mix of global flavors and heartfelt dedication.
