This summer, the landscape of reality television takes a bold turn with the introduction of ‘King of Drag,’ the first-ever drag king competition series hosted by Murray Hill on the free LGBTQ platform Revry.
Premiering on June 22, the show features ten talented drag kings vying for the title over the course of six episodes.
Among these competitors is Austin’s own Alexander the Great, a beloved figure in the local drag scene.
Known for his past performances, Alexander will be hosting viewing parties at Cheer Up Charlies on Sundays alongside Bobby Pudrido and Brigitte Bandit, with additional screenings at Oilcan’s on Tuesdays.
As a veteran performer, Alexander has a rich history, having hosted the former happy-hour drag show ‘Kingdom’ and showcased his talents in collaboration with the award-winning burlesque troupe, the Jigglewatts.
However, his transition into televised competition was more understated.
“I just moved quickly and silently,” he recalls.
“It was one of those things where I said to myself, ‘You know what? I think I could actually maybe do this. So let me just focus and not, you know, cause a bunch of hullabaloo.’”
After auditioning during a winter break, Alexander received a callback and confirmed his participation by February, subsequently traveling to Hollywood amid the whirlwind of South by Southwest.
Adjusting to the structured environment of a television set was a significant shift for the experienced live performer.
“When I do shows, it’s just me and the DJ hitting my music and let’s go,” he explains.
“But when you’re filming something, you’re on someone else’s schedule. They tell you when the show starts—which is great! I love structure, so it’s actually really kind of nice just to be like, ‘Cool. What are we doing next?’”
He also found inspiration among his fellow contestants, which included notable performers like Buck Wylde from Dallas and Pressure K from Atlanta.
“There’s often a narrative of conflict in drag reality TV,” Alexander notes.
“This was something entirely different; the ten of us were truly special. Each one of us has a diverse background, representing various communities and identities. I am thrilled for everyone to witness the talent of my castmates.”
Though the post-competition period has been challenging for Alexander, who jokes that he slept for four days upon returning to Austin, keeping quiet about the experience has been the toughest part.
“I’ve been a different person, but I have to act nonchalant, like ‘Oh, lol, everything’s cool,’” he laughs.
He is eager to discuss the positive impact this platform will have for the LGBTQ community, particularly in Texas.
As a dedicated advocate for transgender rights and an active member of the Austin LGBTQ commission, Alexander hopes his visibility in the show can inspire others and challenge the prevailing narrative that often focuses solely on survival.
“I believe we need to shift our focus from just surviving to celebrating our successes,” he asserts.
“Trans people deserve recognition for our achievements and the varied experiences we bring to the table.”
Throughout his drag career, Alexander has been a source of inspiration for others, encouraging newcomers to join the ranks of drag kings.
“I want to continue opening doors and pulling people behind me. I want to represent trans individuals, especially here in Texas, where we face challenges every day.
Trans people are strong as heck, and we should be recognized for that.”
Mark your calendars for The Great King of Drag Party on June 22 at Cheer Up Charlies, and join Alexander for High Tea on June 24 at Oilcan Harry’s.
