City of Boston Announces Transition to New Parking System

The City of Boston is set to transition to a new parking system, marking a significant upgrade for residents and visitors alike. This transition will take place from June 27 to June 30, during which various services will be unavailable.

Online payments, appeals, and permit applications will not be accessible starting June 27 at 5 p.m. through the morning of June 30. Additionally, payments made via phone will be temporarily unavailable from June 18 to June 30 due to upgrades in the telecom systems.

During this transition period, the Office of the Parking Clerk will also suspend the scheduling of hearings, with no walk-in hearings available from June 30 to July 4.

For those concerned about pending parking ticket appeals or permit applications, the City assures residents that their existing information will carry over seamlessly during the transition. Current parking permit holders will not need to take any action, as their permits will remain valid.

Residents can still visit the Office of the Parking Clerk located at 1 City Hall Plaza, Room 224, to manage tickets and parking permits in person. Pay-by-phone services will resume on June 30 at the previously used number, 617-635-3888.

Mail payments will also continue to be accepted during this time. Residents can mail their payments to the City of Boston, P.O. BOX 55800.

If you are an existing resident parking permit holder, your permit will stay active throughout the transition. In July, all active permit holders will receive a letter containing a link code, allowing them to create an optional account in the new permit management website for online management of their permits.

Setting up an account is necessary only for those applying for a new residential parking permit online. Alternatively, permits can still be applied for in person at the Office of the Parking Clerk. For current permit holders, creating an online account is optional but provides added visibility into permit and violation records.

To clarify, setting up an account is not required to pay or appeal a ticket online. Residents can always contact the Office of the Parking Clerk by calling 617-635-4410 or by visiting the office in person.

Importantly, the changes in the parking system do not entail any new parking rules or regulations, ensuring that residents can navigate their parking needs without additional confusion.

The Tow Lot at 200 Frontage Road will remain staffed 24 hours a day during this transition, allowing residents to retrieve any vehicles that may have been towed at any time.

For residents worried about overdue tickets while the system is down, the City has put measures in place to alleviate concerns. Tickets will not incur a late fee until 24 days after issuance instead of the standard 21 days.

This extension accommodates the system’s downtime by allowing for a grace period with no incurred penalties for unpaid tickets. Residents who find themselves ticketed during the parking permit application system’s downtime—from June 27 to June 30—should not worry if they are eligible to apply for a permit in July.

In such cases, the City encourages residents to reach out to the Office of the Parking Clerk to have their tickets dismissed if they were parked in a resident parking space while awaiting their permit application processing.

This proactive communication and support from the City aims to make the transition as smooth as possible, ensuring all Boston residents can effectively manage their parking needs. As the new system launches, enhancements are expected to improve the overall experience for users in managing parking tickets and permits.

As the June transition draws near, residents are urged to prepare for these changes and to take advantage of the diverse methods available for managing their parking permits and payments. The City remains committed to informing residents of any changes and to providing support during this pivotal update.
