In a chilling case of gang-related violence that unfolded in mid-2021, the brutal kidnapping and murder of Wilmington resident Mark Sellers has led to significant legal consequences for six individuals tied to the Shotgun Crips gang.
The incident took place on a warm summer night, just after midnight, when a green Jeep Grand Cherokee parked outside a row home on Wilmington’s East Side.
As the clock struck 12, three members of the Shotgun Crips recalled their grievances against 35-year-old Sellers, who was not part of their gang.
In a calculated act of vengeance, they emerged from the Jeep and stormed into the house where Sellers was located.
They struck him in the head with a metal pry bar, bound his hands with zip ties, and forcibly dragged him from the residence to the waiting vehicle.
Once inside the Jeep, Sellers was driven to the home of Dwayne Alexander, 37, a leader of the Shotgun Crips in Philadelphia, where the plot took a darker turn.
Soon after, they headed to an industrial park in Yeadon, just outside Philadelphia, where Sellers was lethally shot in the head with an assault-style rifle.
This gruesome execution marked a tragic end for a man working diligently in a moving company, and it has since been the focal point of an extensive legal investigation.
In the years following Sellers’ death, prosecutors delved into the particulars of this gangland violence, ultimately holding six individuals accountable for their roles in the crime.
Among those prosecuted were Kimon Burton-Roberson, Jamil Salahuddin, Rodney Chambers, and Stephanie Bultes-Ramirez, who pleaded guilty to conspiracy to kidnap Sellers in U.S. District Court in Wilmington.
Meanwhile, Josiah Rivera, then 17 years old, faced Delaware Superior Court, pleading guilty to first-degree kidnapping and other charges.
The convoluted legal proceedings culminated recently with a federal jury convicting Alexander of both kidnapping and the grave charge of kidnapping resulting in death.
Prosecutors revealed that Alexander not only provided the murder weapon but also sanctioned the killing, leading to a life sentence under federal law upon sentencing later this year.
As the guilt phase of the trials wrapped up, federal prosecutors discussed with WHYY News the pressing motives behind the crime and the collaborative efforts that led to the successful conviction of the six gang members.
The Shotgun Crips gang is affiliated with the larger Los Angeles-based Crips network and is known for its involvement in higher-level drug trafficking, assaults, auto thefts, and homicides throughout the United States.
In Delaware, the Wilmington chapter of the Shotgun Crips has been implicated in various criminal activities, and the recent case against Sellers highlights the ongoing issue of gang violence in the region.
Assistant U.S. Attorneys Ben Wallace and Michelle Morgan commended residents of Wilmington’s East Side for stepping forward and aiding law enforcement despite the prevalent culture of silence often surrounding high-crime areas.
Wallace expressed gratitude for the courage shown by these community members, noting, “We appreciate the way that the Wilmington community rallied around this case in a way that doesn’t always happen.”
He continued, emphasizing that many hardworking individuals inhabit the neighborhood and that their cooperation is fundamental in combatting crime.
The troubles leading to Sellers’ kidnapping stemmed from disputes over money and stolen property between him and Burton-Roberson, whom authorities attributed as a key instigator in the trouble that weighed down on Sellers.

The system caught their actions on tape, detailing the harrowing scene as they exited the house with Sellers, visibly injured and tied up.
The footage proved crucial in the subsequent investigation, allowing police to identify the Jeep as belonging to Burton-Roberson.
Having no immediate way of knowing the incriminating nature of their visit, the gang returned to Alexander’s residence after the act.
However, the cops were quickly on their trail. Just moments after the killing, law enforcement found Sellers’ body, initiating a search that led to the discovery of significant evidence against the gang members.
Surveillance footage from the industrial park hinted at the dark Jeep and revealed a partial Pennsylvania license plate, soon linking it to Burton-Roberson.
