Cool and Cloudy Weather with Rain Ahead for Greater Boston and New England

Greater Boston and much of New England should brace for a cool day ahead, with mostly cloudy skies and an onshore breeze keeping temperatures in the upper 60s to just around 70 degrees.

This cool weather pattern will be prevalent throughout the region as we head into Friday.

However, changes are on the horizon with a storm system set to arrive in the late afternoon into the evening, impacting the Boston area just after the workday commute.

Scattered showers are expected to move in overnight, continuing into Saturday morning, with lows dipping to the upper 50s and low 60s.

While Friday may feel mostly dry across the region, the atmosphere remains unsettled.

A stalled frontal boundary to the south combined with a pocket of high pressure near Nova Scotia will keep New England’s weather cool, aided by a slight onshore flow.

As the day progresses, the clouds will thicken further.

Later in the day, a system moving in from the west will bring a chance of scattered showers, particularly heavy rainfall across Northern New England from the mid- to late afternoon.

By late Friday night, Boston will also experience an increase in shower activity.

Temperatures will be somewhat cool, with morning commuting temperatures hovering in the low 60s.

In terms of afternoon highs, most areas will reach the upper 60s to low 70s; coastal locations are expected to stay cooler due to the sea breeze.

Northern New England is predicted to see the heaviest rainfall late Friday, with some areas potentially receiving a couple of inches quickly.

This sudden influx of rain could lead to isolated flash flooding incidents.

The varied terrain might contribute to flooding concerns due to excessive runoff, particularly in extreme northern areas of New England.

However, most streams should be able to manage the incoming rain, although there remains a slight flooding risk late Friday into Saturday.

The situation is set to become more interesting, and potentially messy, particularly for residents north of Massachusetts.

An organized weather system is on track to arrive overnight Friday, expanding its reach early Saturday morning.

Rainfall will spread throughout Northern New England, continuing into the morning hours.

As the storm system shifts, a wave of energy will begin to travel through Southern New England and Boston by Saturday afternoon, resulting in scattered showers.

These showers, however, are expected to be lighter than what Northern New England may experience.

Between Friday and Saturday evening, portions of New England could see rainfall totals of up to 2 inches, with some localized areas potentially receiving 3 to 4 inches.

Unfortunately, Saturday’s temperatures are not expected to rise much, remaining in the low 70s under mostly cloudy to overcast conditions.

The weekend pick appears to be Sunday when a sliver of high pressure is forecast to build into the region as Saturday’s storm system exits the area.

Temperatures are expected to be cooler overall but with some improvement.

Highs may reach the mid-70s, with areas well west of I-95 possibly nearing 80 degrees.

Most areas will see mostly cloudy skies, but some sunshine is likely to break through the clouds in the afternoon.

In Greater Boston, expect a cool and cloudy Friday, with highs in the upper 60s and low 70s accompanied by a slight onshore breeze.

There’s also a chance for late-day showers.

On Saturday, the area will be greeted by more clouds and cool temperatures, with highs again reaching the upper 60s and low 70s.

Scattered showers are anticipated, particularly in the afternoon.

However, Sunday is expected to bring a drier day with mostly cloudy skies and some sunny intervals.

Temperatures will rise to the mid-70s.

For Southeastern Massachusetts, cool and predominantly overcast conditions are forecast for Friday, with highs in the low 70s and upper 60s along the coast.

A chance for light rain exists late Friday night, while Saturday will see similar temperatures and more cloud cover, along with afternoon rain chances.

As for Sunday, expect a drier day with temperatures in the low 70s along the coast, and mid to upper 70s further inland, alongside some afternoon sunshine.

Central and Western Massachusetts will again experience cool temperatures on Friday, with highs in the low 70s and mid to upper 60s in the Berkshires.

Friday evening will bring some chances for showers.

On Saturday, temperatures are projected to stay consistent with Friday, alongside expected scattered showers mainly in the afternoon.

Sunday promises to be primarily dry with partly cloudy skies, and temperatures should rise into the mid to upper 70s, with some locales possibly breaking 80 degrees.

For the Cape and Islands, Friday’s high temperatures will be in the mid to upper 60s, followed by a low chance of rain Friday night.

On Saturday, similar temperatures are predicted, with the possibility of an afternoon shower.

Sunday will be a warmer day with more sunshine filtering through the clouds, with highs reaching the low 70s.

In Rhode Island, Friday’s weather will mirror that of Thursday with cool highs in the upper 60s to low 70s and potential for a late evening shower.

Saturday will bring warmer conditions, with highs in the low to mid-70s and afternoon rain chances.

Sunday enhances the sunshine between clouds, with temperatures again reaching the mid to upper 70s.

In New Hampshire, scattered showers are likely on Friday, with highs nudging into the mid to upper 60s.

Another rainy day is in store for Saturday with temperatures only reaching the low 60s, before a return to dry conditions Saturday night.

Sunday remains dry with more sunshine mixed in between clouds, having highs near the upper 60s and low 70s.

Finally, Vermont and Maine will experience scattered to widespread showers Friday afternoon and night, with highs in the upper 60s to low 70s.

Saturday looks to be rainier, especially in the morning, with temperatures cooling to the mid-60s.

By Sunday, conditions will dry out with only a rogue spot shower expected, while temperatures may rise to the upper 70s in Vermont and upper 60s in Maine.
