As summer rolls in and the days lengthen, teens in Key Biscayne are embracing the vibrant island life beyond beach lounging and late mornings. Rather, they are carving out spaces of their own, where friendships blossom and unforgettable memories are made.
For many local teens, the perfect summer must include their favorite hangout spots where they repeatedly return to unwind and socialize. Popular among them is D’Lite Bistro and Bakery, a favorite for those with a sweet tooth and a desire for a laid-back atmosphere.
Nikkie Nahuz, a rising eighth grader at Mast Academy, expresses her love for D’Lite, where she enjoys indulging in açaí bowls while surrounded by friends. She says, “Me and my friends love going to D’Lite, especially the days none of us have practice. It’s the perfect spot to just hang out, talk, and get something good to eat.”
D’Lite has become synonymous with relaxation for Nikkie and her friends, who appreciate its fresh smoothies, acai bowls, and inviting outdoor space. Owner Alessandra Zurek credits her daughter, Martina, for the bistro’s appeal to teens. “She IS D’Lite,” Zurek stated, highlighting how her daughter’s ideas have shaped the cafe.
In response to teen interests, they introduced a special $10 After School Menu featuring nine items that resonate with the younger crowd. With the summer sun out and afternoons free, groups of teens often gather at D’Lite to savor the latest cool treats and enjoy each other’s company.
Located in the Arcade Shopping Center at 180 Crandon Blvd, D’Lite Bistro and Bakery offers its services every day from 7:30 a.m. to 8:30 p.m. The bistro is reachable at (305) 882-9284 or through online orders at kbhealthyfood.com.
Another beloved locale is Kazumi Modern Japanese, situated in the Square Shopping Center. This cozy restaurant has emerged as a favorite haunt for teen couples looking to enjoy a relaxed atmosphere and great food. Rising senior Gabriela Fernandes from Gulliver Prep is among its frequent visitors, often visiting with her boyfriend.
Gabriela shared, “Kazumi is definitely a Key classic. We always get the spicy tuna crispy rice and a couple of rolls to share. It’s simple, but it’s one of those night outs we really look forward to.” The appeal of Kazumi for couples lies in its intimate vibe, helping to create cherished moments away from the public spotlight.
The menu features a range of tantalizing dishes that encourage sharing, enhancing the camaraderie among groups of friends or couples. From appetizers like seared tuna flatbread to more substantial rolls, Kazumi has something for every teen palate.
You can find Kazumi Modern Japanese at 260 Crandon Blvd within the Square Shopping Center. They are open Monday through Saturday and can be reached at 305-361-2675 or through their website at kazumirestaurant.com.
Of course, no summer in Key Biscayne would be complete without the beach. For many residents, this natural treasure is the crown jewel of their summer plans. Fernanda Cerqueira, a rising Gulliver senior, reveals her passion for the beach, describing it as her favorite place on the island.
“I love going to the beach, it’s my favorite place to go in Key Biscayne,” Fernanda remarked. She relishes the simple pleasures—tanning, enjoying the ocean breeze, and the soothing sounds of splashing waves which make her feel completely relaxed.
The beach serves as a backdrop for numerous summer gatherings where teens enjoy not just tan lines but also quality time spent with friends, often wrapping their day with snacks such as açaí bowls or sushi.
This summer, Key Biscayne teens are busy taking full advantage of their beautiful surroundings, gathering in these popular spots to enjoy good food and even better company. As the sun shines down on the island, friendship and joy flourish, creating a summer packed with exciting experiences and cherished moments.
