In a recent survey conducted by The New York Times, over 500 film directors, actors, and avid enthusiasts provided their insights to curate a list of the best 100 films since the turn of the century. This bold attempt highlights influential works over the last two decades, and notably, several films and talent with connections to Austin made this prestigious list.
Leading the way is Richard Linklater, an iconic figure synonymous with Austin’s film scene. His groundbreaking film Boyhood secured an impressive No. 23 on the list. Shot entirely in Austin over a span of more than a decade, Boyhood narrates the fictionalized yet relatable coming-of-age journey of its central character. Additionally, Linklater’s Before Sunset, part of a unique romantic trilogy, is ranked at No. 49. This film, which explores the evolution of a relationship over nearly two decades, underscores Linklater’s exceptional grasp of time in storytelling.
Another Austin connection on the list comes from Terrance Malick, known for his esoteric and visually evocative storytelling. His magnum opus, which features a stellar cast including Brad Pitt and Jessica Chastain, is set against the backdrop of 1950s Texas and covers grand themes from the creation of Earth to the nature of humanity. Scenes from this sprawling narrative were filmed at notable Austin locations, like Barton Springs and the Texas State Capitol.
Wes Anderson, although born in Houston, also ties back to Austin through his education at the University of Texas, where he met long-time collaborator Owen Wilson. Two of his distinct films made it into the list; The Grand Budapest Hotel sitting at No. 22 and The Royal Tenenbaums at No. 21, illustrating Anderson’s unique cinematic style and storytelling.
Austin’s influence extends beyond directors; its actors also feature prominently on the list. Matthew McConaughey, a cultural ambassador for the city, plays the lead in Christopher Nolan’s science fiction epic Interstellar, which is recognized at No. 89. His emotional performance, particularly a poignant scene of him sobbing, has remained etched in pop culture as a meme, showcasing his lasting impact.
Elijah Wood, widely recognized for his performance as Frodo in The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring, which earned the No. 87 position, once called Austin home for nearly a decade. Despite having sold his Bouldin Creek residence in 2021, Wood remains connected to the city and even emphasized his continued ties in a recent interview.
Ethan Hawke, another Austin native, collaborates with Linklater on both of his films featured in the list: Boyhood and Before Sunset. Their continued partnership over the years showcases a mutual respect and creative synergy that resonates with audiences.
Sandra Bullock adds to the list of prominent Austin figures, having established a longstanding residence in the city. She starred in Gravity, a gripping space thriller directed by Alfonso Cuarón, which ranks at No. 97. Bullock’s roots in the city, along with her ownership of local deli Walton’s Fancy & Staple, further solidify her connection to Austin.
Aside from the actors and directors, significant films premiered at the South by Southwest (SXSW) festival, showcasing the city’s growing cinematic presence. The Hurt Locker, directed by Kathryn Bigelow, had its U.S. premiere at SXSW in 2009 and made a considerable impact, receiving nine Oscar nominations and winning six, including Best Picture.
