Robert Pinsky Reflects on His Teaching Career and the Future of Poetry

BOSTON – Three-time U.S. Poet Laureate Robert Pinsky has left a significant mark on the literary world through his extensive teaching career and his innovative contributions to poetry.

After nearly 30 years as a professor at Boston University, Pinsky is wrapping up his tenure and contemplating the next chapter of his life.

Pinsky’s journey began in New Jersey, where he initially found his identity as a saxophone player. This musical background deeply influenced his approach to poetry, which he often describes as a form of art closely related to music.

Throughout his career, Pinsky has collaborated with notable musicians on a project he refers to as “PoemJazz,” blending the rhythms of poetry with the sounds of jazz. He recalled moments from his past that revealed the overlapping worlds of poetry and music, stating, “Poetry is the sister art of music.”

He acknowledges that poetry has historically served as a transformative force in American culture, though he believes many schools continue to isolate poetry, making it less accessible to students.
