Love City Love Opens in Former ShopRite Spot Amid Capitol Hill Redevelopment Plans

Capitol Hill is experiencing a wave of change as Love City Love, a nomadic arts venue, settles into the former ShopRite location on 15th Ave E.

This space has been a cornerstone of the neighborhood for 30 years, but its future is uncertain as plans for redevelopment loom.

Developed by Hunters Capital, the six-story project promises 330 units but is currently on hold.

Hunters Capital is waiting for improved economic conditions, as a spokesperson explained: “When interest rates and construction costs go down and rents go up, we will have a bankable deal and we will get a loan and start construction.”

In the meantime, Love City Love is bringing a vibrant mix to the local culture with events such as open mics and sewing classes.

“We have an open mic every Thursday,” shared Lucien Pellegrin.

“Additionally, we offer sewing classes on Saturdays and Thursdays throughout the summer.”

The venue has cafe hours from 11 AM to 8 PM on weekends, encouraging community engagement in this transitional space.

The ShopRite closure is not an isolated incident; it reflects ongoing changes along 15th Ave E.

Despite losses, like tiny Casita International closing earlier this spring after 15 years of business, new establishments are emerging.

A new Italian restaurant from Cantinetta is set to open soon in the Hunters Capital Hilltop Apartments at 15th and Mercer, while Fire Tacos & Cantina is preparing to move into the old Coastal Kitchen building.

The Capitol Hill Quality Flea Center continues to operate, hosting regular markets and events, thereby providing a platform for local vendors.

Further diversifying the street, the temporary pop-up of Haunted Burrow Books features offerings in horror and dark fantasy genres, appealing to niche audiences.

Next week, the neighborhood merchant group is organizing a 15th Ave E patio party to celebrate the unique characteristics of this evolving community.

Love City Love’s arrival on 15th Ave E adds a layer of eclectic art and community engagement to the ongoing transformation of the area.

Situated at 432 15th Ave E, Love City Love exemplifies resilience, adapting to the changes that Capitol Hill presents, and inviting locals to participate in its artistic endeavors.

With a steady stream of activities, Love City Love is poised to enliven the neighborhood, proving that even in liminal spaces, creativity and community can flourish.
