A recent study confirms that South Florida’s US-1 corridor in Coconut Grove ranks as one of the busiest roadways in the nation, highlighting ongoing traffic challenges in the region. Between frequent stoplights and honking cars, navigating US-1 has become a daily struggle for many drivers, especially during peak hours. CBS News Miami visited commuters at the Douglas Road Station, where many rely on Metrorail for their daily commute. One rider noted, “Aside from the traffic, you actually get to see some of the sights out the window.” The presence of Metrorail trains constantly gliding by adds to the perception that transit might be a faster alternative, but congestion persists despite this. According to the 2024 INRIX Global Traffic Scorecard, southbound US-1 between I-95 and SW 42nd Street is ranked as the 22nd busiest corridor nationwide. The study found that commuters along this stretch lost an average of 53 hours in traffic last year, with congestion peaking around 8 a.m. Many residents and transit advocates agree that US-1 is perpetually congested, making daily travel a frustrating experience. Tala Habash, a representative from Transit Alliance, emphasizes that driving often does not save time. She states, “You think you’re going to get there faster by driving, but really, you’re just adding to the traffic and stress.” The increasing congestion has prompted more Miami-Dade residents to opt for public transit options. Metrorail ridership increased by 11% in 2024, with some of the busiest stations situated along the US-1 corridor—including Douglas Road, Dadeland North, and Dadeland South. This shift toward transit is expected to continue as transit infrastructure improves. Habash advocates for extending the Metrorail along the SMART Plan to reach strategic areas such as Florida International University (FIU), expanding service along Flagler Street, and increasing access to northern neighborhoods like Wynwood. She explains that enhanced connectivity and expanded transit options make choosing public transportation a more seamless and attractive option for commuters. As South Florida continues to grow, experts and residents alike recognize that investing in improved transit infrastructure is essential to alleviating traffic congestion and reducing stress for daily travelers. Expanding Metrorail and enhancing connectivity could not only ease current traffic issues but also promote sustainable transportation in the region, leading to a healthier and more accessible Miami-Dade County.
