Elle Archer Revives Shaylee: A Journey of Transformation and Collaboration

Elle Archer, the creative force behind the power pop act Shaylee, has announced the return of her musical project after a series of personal and professional challenges.

Archer first introduced the name Shaylee during a casual conversation with friends, where she humorously noted the peculiar names given to children today, prompting a friend to reference names like ‘Shaylee’ and ‘Tarantula.’

Initially, Shaylee was formed in a different incarnation, characterized by its promise and potential.

Archer, who publicly came out as a trans woman in 2018, adopted her chosen name with deep significance, reflecting her personal journey.

After moving to Portland in July 2018, she found inspiration in Elliott Smith’s music, leading to an eventual multi-album deal with Kill Rock Stars.

The band’s second album, ‘Short-Sighted Security,’ delved into Archer’s experiences during the onset of the pandemic and featured her as the primary producer and performer.

However, the internal dynamics of Shaylee changed, especially with the involvement of Archer’s then-girlfriend Robin Cook on bass.

Archer acknowledged the challenges that arose from her leadership style, which led to tensions among band members during live performances and creative processes.

After a period of confusion about the direction of Shaylee—whether it should be a collaborative effort or led solely by her—Archer decided to put the project to rest.

This marked a new chapter for Archer, as she joined Cook’s project, Girl Fiend, fostering a more collaborative environment until their romantic relationship ended, prompting Archer to reassess her musical journey.

Recognizing her passion for guitar, Archer felt the need to return to the music scene, determined not to let her confidence as a trans artist diminish her drive.

With fresh resolve, Archer sought to reform Shaylee, reaching out to musicians from her community to create a new lineup.

Drummer Idis Rapozo, bassist Mason McKinney-Best, and rhythm guitarist Annie Wilder joined Archer, forming a four-piece band that brings a fuller, more robust sound to Shaylee’s music.

The revitalized band promises a more expressive and liberated musical dynamic, allowing Archer to flex her guitar skills alongside her bandmates.

Shaylee’s return is also marked by the release of a new single, ‘Reintroduction.’ This track serves as a heartfelt communication to their audience, with Archer’s confessional style at the forefront.

The lyrics reflect a deep understanding of ambition and self-awareness, culminating in a powerful chorus that resonates with the struggles of creative expression.

As she navigates this new phase of the project, Archer embraces the uncertainty of Shaylee’s future, hopeful yet grounded in the passion that fuels her creativity.

The official re-launch of Shaylee will take place during the seventh installment of Archer’s ongoing performance showcase, Transfemme Takeover, at Lollipop Shoppe on July 20.

This resurgence not only highlights Archer’s artistic growth but also her commitment to honest storytelling in her music, creating excitement around Shaylee’s next chapter.
