Current Status of Tariffs: What’s Enforced and What’s Deferred

The past week has witnessed significant fluctuations for businesses and markets as President Trump announced extensive tariffs, only to abruptly pause most of them shortly after their implementation.

About 12 hours after country-specific tariffs took effect on dozens of U.S. trading partners, Trump stated that he would pause most of them for 90 days.

In a post on Truth Social, Trump explained that this decision came after more than 75 countries contacted U.S. representatives to negotiate regarding trade issues such as trade barriers, tariffs, currency manipulation, and non-monetary tariffs.

He remarked that these countries had, at his strong suggestion, refrained from retaliatory actions against the United States.

Despite persistent insistence throughout the week that the country-specific tariffs would not be halted, Trump conceded later that the declining markets were contributing to nervousness.
