The brother of ‘doomsday mom’ Lori Vallow Daybell testified Thursday in a Maricopa County Superior Court that when he learned of Charles Vallow’s death in 2019, he had ‘no doubt’ she had conspired to kill him.
Vallow Daybell, who is currently representing herself in court, is on trial for the fatal shooting of her fourth husband, Charles Vallow, on July 11, 2019. He was shot by her brother, Alex Cox, at her home in Chandler, Arizona. Alex Cox later died from a pulmonary embolism and was never charged with any crime related to the shooting.
Adam Cox, Lori Vallow Daybell’s brother, testified that he flew to Arizona in July 2019, intending to stage a surprise intervention for his sister, alongside Charles Vallow, to address what he described as her increasingly bizarre religious comments.
According to Adam Cox, Lori Vallow Daybell expressed beliefs that she was ‘in the process of translating from a mortal human being to an immortal human being,’ aiming to become a ‘celestial being.’ He noted that such statements deviated significantly from the beliefs held by their family as members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
In his testimony, Adam Cox also revealed that his sister claimed she held greater spiritual authority than a priest and did not require repentance. After expressing his concerns about Lori’s statements, he stated that she ceased all communication with him.
On the day of the shooting, Charles Vallow sent a text message to Adam Cox, informing him that Alex was present at Vallow Daybell’s home while he was there to take his son, Joshua ‘JJ’ Vallow, to school.
Adam Cox expressed that Alex’s presence at Lori’s house that morning felt ‘really off,’ leading him to believe the pair was plotting something.
It wasn’t until several days after the shooting that Adam Cox discovered Charles Vallow had been killed. He stated that he immediately confided in his family about his belief that Lori and Alex had conspired to murder Charles.
‘Lori had told people that Charles was no longer living, that some guy named ‘Ned’ was inside of his body, that there was a zombie living inside of him,’ Adam testified. ‘And Alex didn’t respond to any of my text messages when I was supposed to be with him, and he was at that house that morning. All these things all added up into that moment and that morning once I found out on Saturday that Charles was shot and killed, no doubt in my mind that they killed him. That’s a feeling that I got.’
During a brief cross-examination, Vallow Daybell asked her brother how long it had been since they had seen each other in person. Adam replied, ‘I don’t know the year or how many years it’s been.’
Addressing him as ‘Mr. Cox,’ she inquired whether he had ever personally witnessed her conspire with Alex to kill Charles. Adam responded, ‘No.’
In a redirect examination, Adam Cox told prosecutor Treena Kay that he severed all communication with Lori after the shooting.
In 2023, Vallow Daybell received multiple life sentences in Idaho for the deaths of her two children, Joshua ‘JJ’ Vallow and Tylee Ryan. Separately, she faces charges of conspiring to kill Brandon Boudreaux, her niece’s estranged husband. A trial date for this charge has not yet been established, and she has pleaded not guilty.
