US President Donald Trump is set to host his El Salvador counterpart, Nayib Bukele, at the White House on Monday, emphasizing the Central American leader’s pivotal role as a key ally in Washington’s aggressive stance against undocumented immigration.
Bukele has committed to accepting migrants deported from the United States, including more than 250 individuals who have been detained in a high-security Salvadoran prison known for its harsh conditions.
The vast majority of these detainees are Venezuelans, whom Trump’s administration has accused of being associated with the Tren de Aragua gang.
