In a landmark moment for Dominican aviation, Arajet, the nation’s burgeoning airline, has successfully completed its inaugural flight to the United States.
Flight DM2100, operated by a Boeing 737 Max 8 christened “Los Haitises,” departed from Las Américas International Airport (SDQ) in Santo Domingo.
It touched down at Miami International Airport (MIA), marking a pivotal expansion for the airline and the Dominican Republic’s connection to the global stage.
This significant achievement was facilitated in part by the Open Skies Agreement, a crucial accord that fosters enhanced air travel links between the Dominican Republic and the United States.
This agreement paves the way for increased flight options and greater convenience for travelers on both sides.
The inaugural flight carried 168 passengers and was met with an enthusiastic reception from Miami airport authorities and representatives from both the U.S. and Dominican governments.
The arrival marks the beginning of Arajet’s scheduled service between Santo Domingo and Miami, initially operating four times weekly.
This frequency is set to increase to daily flights by the summer, demonstrating Arajet’s commitment to serving the growing demand for travel between the two cities.
Furthermore, Arajet announced the addition of a daily route connecting Punta Cana, a major Dominican tourist destination, with Miami, further solidifying its presence in the U.S. market.
The airline has already transported over two million passengers since its inception 30 months ago.
Arajet’s foray into the United States represents a substantial step in bolstering the Dominican Republic’s standing in international aviation.
This expansion not only provides more travel options but also strengthens economic and cultural ties between the two nations.
The send-off ceremony in Santo Domingo was attended by key figures in the Dominican aviation sector.
These included Monika Infante, CEO of AERODOM, the airport management company, and Ariel Yánez, representing the U.S. Embassy in the Dominican Republic.
Their presence underscored the significance of this first flight and the collaborative efforts involved in making it a reality.
Adding a personal touch to the historic occasion, Arajet recognized Pablo Mejía Durán as the first Dominican passenger to travel to the United States with the airline.
Expressing his pride, Mr. Mejía Durán stated, “I am proud to travel with Arajet to visit my family in Miami. It is our Dominican airline, and we must support it.”
His sentiments reflect the national pride and anticipation surrounding Arajet’s expansion.
Víctor Pacheco Méndez, CEO of Arajet, noted the importance of the occasion.
“This is a historic moment for Arajet and for the entire Dominican Republic.”
“This first flight to the capital of Latin America, Miami, is just the beginning of our commitment.
We offer efficient and more affordable travel options for our passengers.
It connects this city with the entire continent and fosters tourism, business, and cultural exchanges between both nations.”
His words highlight Arajet’s vision for the future and its dedication to providing accessible travel.
Upon arrival in Miami, the aircraft was greeted with a traditional water salute, a celebratory gesture in aviation.
The aircraft was then parked at Gate E10.
The Dominican and American flags waved side-by-side, symbolizing the strengthened connection between the two countries.
Ralph Cutié, Director and Chief Executive Officer of Miami International Airport, expressed his enthusiasm.
“We are proud to welcome Arajet Airlines and thank them for making MIA their first destination in the United States.”
“We hope their new flights will attract even more visitors to our community.
It provides our residents with another affordable option for traveling to the Dominican Republic.”
His welcoming remarks underscore the potential for increased tourism and economic benefits for the Miami region.
Geanilda Vásquez, the Consul General of the Dominican Republic in Miami, also celebrated the occasion.
“This flight is an achievement that reflects the growth of our aviation sector.
The increasing connectivity benefits both Dominicans and those who wish to visit our country,” she stated.
“I want to congratulate the aviation authorities of both countries, the Arajet team, and everyone who made this possible.”
Her words emphasize the broader impact of this new air service on the Dominican community and international relations.
Arajet’s successful entry into the U.S. market builds on its track record of transporting over two million passengers in a relatively short period.
It underscores the rapid advancement of the Dominican aviation industry and its growing ability to compete on a global scale.
This first flight to Miami marks a significant step forward in connecting the Dominican Republic with the world.
