Luigi Mangione, accused of killing CEO Brian Thompson, has been indicted on federal charges this Thursday, just a day before his scheduled court appearance in connection with the December killing of Thompson.
The indictment filed against Mangione in the Southern District of New York charges him with stalking and murdering Thompson through the use of interstate travel, electronic communications, and a firearm.
As of now, it is unclear when the 26-year-old Mangione will be arraigned.
The victim, Brian Thompson, was the 50-year-old head of UnitedHealthcare, which is the largest health insurer in the United States.
Mangione, who is an Ivy League graduate, stands accused of gunning down Thompson in a shocking act that has garnered significant media attention.
This federal indictment follows on the heels of earlier state charges against Mangione, and prosecutors have indicated that the two cases will proceed on parallel tracks.
The federal charges include murder through the use of a firearm, which carries the possibility of the death penalty. The state charges, on the other hand, carry a maximum punishment of life in prison.
The federal charges against Mangione encompass two counts of stalking, one count of murder through the use of a firearm, and one count of using a firearm equipped with a silencer while committing a crime of violence.
Following the arrest of Mangione in Altoona, Pennsylvania, authorities indicated that he possessed a 9mm handgun that matched the weapon used in the killing of Thompson.
During his arrest, investigators found that Mangione was also carrying a passport, fake IDs, and approximately $10,000 in cash.
The federal complaint, which was initially filed in December, noted that Mangione maintained a spiral notebook with several handwritten pages expressing hostility toward the health insurance industry and wealthy executives.
Among the entries in this notebook were comments from August 2024 that indicated
