Exciting Weekend Events in Boston: From Musical Adventures to Local Festivals

As spring slowly gives way to summer, Boston is gearing up for an action-packed weekend filled with creative and cultural activities. With a variety of free events taking place, locals can shake off the dreary weather and immerse themselves in vibrant experiences.

One standout event is ‘T: An MBTA Musical,’ a comedic exploration of the ups and downs of navigating Boston’s public transit system. Now playing through Sunday, June 15, at The Rockwell in Somerville, the show follows the journey of three Bostonians as they face numerous challenges while riding the T.

Originally debuting in 2011 at ImprovBoston, creators Melissa Carubia and Mike Manship have updated the musical to reflect recent incidents, such as the remarkable occurrence of an Orange Line train catching fire. Tickets for this engaging production range from $25 to $45.

For those seeking relaxation and leisure, The Colonnade Boston has opened its rooftop pool for the season. Boston’s only rooftop pool features a bar, small bites, and cabanas available for rent. New this year is a partnership with Lovestruck Books, offering a lending library for guests who wish to enjoy a good read while soaking up the sun. Access to the pool costs $55 on weekdays and Sundays after 1 p.m.

If rain interrupts plans, Lovestruck Books will host a special event on Friday featuring Julia Quinn, the celebrated author of the ‘Bridgerton’ series. Attendees can meet Quinn, snap photos with her, and enjoy life-size cutouts of characters from the novels. In addition, guests will have the opportunity to try a Bridgerton-themed cocktail while getting their books signed. This free event requires registration via Eventbrite, allowing up to three books purchased at Lovestruck and one from home to be signed, with the option for personalization on one book.

Additionally, the 28th Annual Do It Your Damn Self!! National Youth Film Festival will be held on Friday, June 6, and Saturday, June 7, at Harvard Art Museums’ Menschel Hall and MIT Open Space Programming.

Recognized as the longest-running youth film festival in the United States, the event showcases films created by young filmmakers around the world. After the screening, attendees can participate in a panel discussion with the talented teen filmmakers. This festival is free to the public, although early registration is recommended due to limited seating.

On Saturday, June 7, the free SOMEDAY FEST will also take place in Somerville, celebrating local music and artists. The festival is organized by the Somerville Organization for Multimedia Experiences (SOME), a creative platform founded by a group of passionate artists and journalists, including Ryan DiLello, Jason Pramas, and Lily Robinson.

DiLello, who is also a member of the alt-rock band Otis Shanty, will perform with other local talents, including composer Shira Laucharoen, singer-songwriter Dumbest Fella Alive, and pop-rock duo Not Friends. If the anticipated rain falls, the festival will be rescheduled for Sunday, June 8.

In addition to music, the 15th annual Dance for World Community Festival will occur on Saturday, June 7, and aims to showcase diverse performances and classes from over 60 dance companies.

The event is designed to spotlight how dance acts as a medium for social change, featuring groups like BALAM Dance Theatre & Marblehead School of Ballet and Flamenco Rhode Island. Alongside performances, various advocacy organizations, such as the Asian Task Force Against Domestic Violence and Massachusetts Peace Action, will be present to highlight dance-related initiatives. Arts and food vendors will also be available, providing opportunities for local shopping and sampling delicious treats.

Whether residents are looking to catch a show, enjoy a day at the pool, or participate in lively festivals, Boston offers plenty of activities for everyone this weekend. As summer approaches, the city continues to showcase its rich culture and vibrant community spirit.
