Summer Fun Activities for Students in Portland

As summer approaches in the city, students are seeking ways to embrace the season and make lasting memories outside the confines of their study routines. With budget-friendly options available, it’s the perfect time to explore and enjoy all that Portland has to offer.

One of the top recommendations for science enthusiasts is the Kendall Planetarium at the Oregon Museum of Science and Industry (OMSI). Open to the public on Tuesday, Wednesday, or Thursday afternoons from noon to 5 p.m., the planetarium provides an excellent opportunity to experience the wonders of science in a less crowded setting. Remarkably, the Arts for All program recently expanded to allow those with a college ID to purchase tickets for just $5.

For history buffs, the Oregon Historical Society (OHS) currently features the exhibit “She Flies with Her Own Wings: Oregon’s Golden Age of Aviation,” running until November 30, 2025. Admission to the exhibit costs only $8, making it a great trip for those eager to learn about Oregon’s aviation heritage.

Animal lovers can visit the Oregon Zoo to see diverse wildlife, including mountain goats, sea otters, and lions, to name a few. While a standard ticket is priced at $26 for adults, there is also an Income Assistance Admission available for just $13, making it accessible to more visitors.

If you prefer outdoor activities that won’t stretch your budget, consider biking, walking, or enjoying a picnic along the Waterfront Park Trail at Tom McCall Waterfront Park. The park offers public restrooms and is dog-friendly, perfect for an enjoyable day out.

Mark your calendars for the upcoming Juneteenth celebration on June 21 at Lillis-Albina Park. This event commemorates the day, June 19, 1865, when Galveston, Texas, recognized President Abraham Lincoln’s Emancipation Proclamation that ended slavery.

July promises a vibrant calendar of events in Portland. One highlight is the annual Pride Parade scheduled for Sunday, July 20, starting at 11 a.m. from the North Park Blocks and wrapping up at Naito Parkway during the festival. Although there’s a suggested donation of $10 for attendees, those without funds are encouraged to join the festivities regardless.

Additionally, residents can look forward to the Mississippi Street and Montavilla Street Fairs, featuring a variety of live music, arts, crafts, and delicious food.

For jazz enthusiasts, the 45th annual Cathedral Park Jazz Festival will take place from Friday, July 18, through Sunday, July 20. This popular event is free and promises great music for all attendees.

Food lovers should also not miss the Portland Thai Festival, hosting a “Taste of Thailand” event on Saturday, June 21, and Sunday, June 22, from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. at the Yard Apartments, where admission is complimentary.

For those feeling the urge to make a positive impact, numerous animal rescues in the area welcome volunteers. The Oregon Humane Society seeks volunteer dog walkers and foster caregivers, while smaller rescues often need someone with a vehicle to transport animals to veterinary appointments. One Tail at a Time is dedicated to rescuing dogs from overcrowded shelters and pairing them with loving foster families until they find their forever homes.

Cat lovers can lend a hand at The Pixie Project, which seeks volunteers for its cattery to socialize kittens and maintain a clean environment. Additionally, they also require transportation assistance for events, outreach, and other needs.

Volunteers can also get involved with the Pongo Fund Pet Food Bank, which looks for help in packing and delivering pet food. This organization has fed over 230,000 pets since its inception in 2007, showing the crucial role it plays in the community.

Lastly, although often overlooked, the Multnomah County Animal Shelter in Troutdale is always in need of volunteers in various capacities, including dog walking, cleaning kennels, and fostering.

If your summer schedule is too packed to volunteer, consider making a donation to any animal rescue. With so many opportunities to explore and give back, this summer is bound to be a fulfilling and eventful one for students in Portland.
