LIVORNO, Italy – After an impressive 41-year career with the U.S. Army, Massimo Carpina is preparing for retirement at the end of July.
Carpina, a deputy support operations officer at the Army Field Support Battalion-Africa, began his journey at Leghorn Army Depot in 1984.
“I dedicated over four decades of my life to service with the United States Army,” Carpina shared with pride.
With the Army celebrating its 250th birthday this year, Carpina finds significant joy in retiring during such a historic moment.
Despite feeling a mix of emotions leading up to his retirement, Carpina expresses immense gratitude for his time with the Army.
“On one hand I’ve given the best part of my life to the Army, and I’m extremely proud of that. On the other hand, I’m going to miss my team here at AFSBn-Africa and at the brigade,” said the 64-year-old lifelong resident of Livorno.
A devoted father of six and grandfather of three, Carpina looks forward to spending quality time with his family in his retirement.
His love story began in 1989 when he met his wife, Chiara Mattirolo, who serves as the Camp Darby public affairs officer.
“Meeting Chiara, making her my wife and building a family together was the best decision of my life,” Carpina reflected.
The couple married in September 2003, and Carpina emphasizes now is the time for him to focus on supporting her and their family.
As he prepares for this new chapter, Carpina expressed a deep sense of pride and appreciation for the opportunities the Army provided him over the decades.
“Thanks for all the opportunities. We sometimes forget how lucky we are to have these amazing possibilities, and I believe I made the most of them during my 41 years of service,” he stated.
Carpina’s role at AFSBn-Africa included responsibilities such as receiving, maintaining, and storing Army Prepositioned Stocks-2 at Leghorn Army Depot.
The battalion also played a key role in issuing APS-2 to tactical units, most recently providing over 500 tactical vehicles and major end items to a National Guard unit from the U.S. participating in DEFENDER 25 in Europe.
AFSBn-Africa is one of four battalions operating under the mission command of the 405th Army Field Support Brigade.
This brigade is responsible for delivering vital materiel enterprise support to U.S. forces throughout Europe and Africa, including theater sustainment logistics and synchronization of acquisition and logistics technology.
As Massimo Carpina steps away from his historic role, he leaves behind a legacy of dedication and service to the U.S. Army that will surely be remembered by his colleagues and community.
