In an exciting announcement, Chicago Public Media has revealed that Aron Pilhofer will take on the role of Chief Product and Membership Officer, effective June 17.
Pilhofer, known for his significant contributions to digital media, comes to the organization with a wealth of experience from prestigious news outlets such as the New York Times and The Guardian.
His journey in the media landscape began when he received a call for advice from the current leader at Chicago Public Media back in 2013, marking the start of a professional relationship that has fostered a strong advisory connection.
Prior to this appointment, Pilhofer was the Chief Product Officer at the Minnesota Star Tribune, where he successfully led technology strategy and execution.
His new position will see him take charge of product, engineering, insights, and membership operations across all Chicago Public Media brands.
This strategic move aligns with Chicago Public Media’s commitment to enhancing Membership as a central focus of its mission.
As Chief Product and Membership Officer, Pilhofer will streamline the operational foundations that support membership initiatives, development, circulation, and sponsorship as well as advertisement sales.
His involvement in the Ops Steering team marks his role as a pivotal strategic partner within the leadership group, aiming to innovate the future of public media while extending the organization’s impact.
The recruitment of Pilhofer may come as a surprise to some, including the team’s current leadership.
Initial discussions brought attention to another potential role within the organization, yet circumstances led to this timely opportunity.
The functions of the newly proposed VP of Enterprise Systems & Revenue Operations will be reassessed as Pilhofer determines the needs of his team moving forward.
Additionally, Matt Watson, who has served since 2017 as Chief Product Officer at the Chicago Sun-Times, will report to Pilhofer in his new role as VP of Product, Audience Experience.
Watson has played an essential role in preparing initiatives that will drive the organization into its next chapter, and leadership is excited about the developments he will spearhead focused specifically on audience-facing platforms.
Moreover, Rashad Brown, currently the VP of Membership, will also fall under Pilhofer’s leadership as they collaborate on the strategic planning for Product and Membership in this new era.
The teamwork involving Drew Brody, Pilhofer, Watson, and Brown is anticipated to effectively shape the roadmap for future innovations within Chicago Public Media.
As the countdown to his official start date begins, Pilhofer is expected to make early appearances at the office, and team members are encouraged to extend a warm welcome as he acclimates to his new role.
This appointment not only reflects the organization’s commitment to leading in public media but also enhances the framework that will guide its future success in a rapidly changing media landscape.
