The Huntington Theatre Company is excited to announce the upcoming North American tour of the heartwarming and hilarious comedy, Kim’s Convenience, written by Ins Choi.
This award-winning play, which inspired the beloved television series that aired for five successful seasons on CBC and Netflix, will be presented at The Huntington’s Calderwood Pavilion at the BCA.
The performance will run from Thursday, November 6 to Sunday, November 23, 2025.
Produced by Soulpepper, Canada’s leading artist-driven theatre company, in association with American Conservatory Theater and Adam Blanshay Productions, Kim’s Convenience promises to deliver both humor and poignant family moments.
Directed by Weyni Mengesha, the play explores the life of Mr. Kim, a hard-working Korean-Canadian shopkeeper navigating the changing landscape of his Toronto neighborhood and the generational divide between him and his children, born and raised in Canada.
Ins Choi, who wrote the play and stars as Mr. Kim (or Appa) in this production, describes Kim’s Convenience as “my love letter to my Appa and Umma, and to all first-generation immigrants who end up making a foreign land, home.”
Choi, reflecting on his journey with the play, expressed his gratitude for the opportunity to portray Appa after originally playing Jung, the son, almost fifteen years ago.
“My kids have been preparing me for this their whole lives,” he noted, highlighting the personal connection he has developed with the role over the years.
Kim’s Convenience began its journey at the 2011 Toronto Fringe Festival, with its premiere production being staged by Soulpepper Theatre Company in Toronto.
Its popularity surged, leading to the creation of a television series that has received acclaim from audiences worldwide.
Critics have lauded the play for its sharp wit and emotional depth.
The Toronto Star notes that this current production of Kim’s Convenience “remains as sharp, witty, and moving as ever.”
Similarly, Everything Theatre referred to the UK tour as an “achingly funny… Hilarious, heart-warming story of love, family, and survival through change and challenge.”
Kim’s Convenience is a key part of The Huntington Selects program, which curates unique touring productions designed to provide Boston audiences with exciting theatrical experiences.
This series is available as an add-on to The Huntington’s subscription season, and FlexPass holders can redeem tickets for these events.
The cast of Kim’s Convenience features a talented lineup of actors, including Ins Choi as Appa, who has previously played this role in various productions and contributed to the TV series as its co-creator and executive producer.
Esther Chung takes on the role of Umma, Appa’s supportive wife, adding her experience from the world premiere of Bigfoot! and notable appearances in series like Cross and The Boys.
Ryan Jinn portrays Jung, the 32-year-old son, carrying on the legacy of his character from the TV adaptation.
Kelly J. Seo plays Janet, Appa and Umma’s 30-year-old daughter, with credits spanning many productions of Kim’s Convenience and other theater works.
