Houston Weather Update: Rain Chances Rise as Summer Continues

As high pressure begins to recede, Houston is bracing for an increase in rain chances during the first half of this week.

The change in the weather pattern brings hope for rain, particularly as we transition further into summer.

The summer season, which spans from June to August meteorologically, often encompasses much of September in Houston as well.

With this in mind, we take a look at what Houstonians can expect for the remaining months of summer.

Reflecting on the month of June, temperatures have not been overwhelmingly hot, although this might be misleading due to a cool spell earlier this month.

Widespread rainfall resulted in a significant drop in temperatures, bringing highs down to the 80s and lower 90s temporarily.

However, there have also been periods where temperatures soared to 95 degrees Fahrenheit or higher, marking a warm June overall.

When considering the averages, June’s temperatures are currently about 2 degrees Fahrenheit above the norm.

Looking forward, the outlook for July, August, and September suggests warmer-than-normal temperatures.

While mid-90s can be expected frequently, extreme triple-digit days may only occur sporadically.

In terms of rainfall, seasonal models indicate near-normal precipitation levels for the remainder of the summer.

It is hoped that this rainfall occurs in a consistent manner throughout the season, rather than being concentrated in a few tropical systems.

In addition, residents are encouraged to seek assistance through various programs in the area aimed at providing relief from the summer heat.

Reliant’s “Beat the Heat” initiative supports this need by offering numerous cooling centers around Houston, along with payment assistance for those having difficulty with electric bills during the hotter months.

A discussion post will be revealed later today at 10 am, highlighting tips for surviving the summer psychologically.

Last week, many contributed their creative ideas, which were gathered together by Dwight Silverman for community sharing.

As Monday unfolds, the improved conditions mean a 30 percent chance of rain is likely.

Forecasts indicate partly to mostly sunny skies with high temperatures hovering in the low- to mid-90s.

Afternoon winds should peak around 10 mph from the southeast, with occasional gusts providing some relief.

Overnight, temperatures are expected to drop into the upper 70s, continuing the warm and humid trend.

For Tuesday and Wednesday, the potential for rain dramatically increases, with estimates suggesting that at least half of the area could receive rain each day.

These rainfall events are expected to be scattered, resulting in a varied accumulation of precipitation, where some neighborhoods might experience significant downpours of up to 2 inches, while others may only receive a fraction of that.

Temperatures will likely remain in the lower 90s throughout these days with continued partly sunny conditions.

As Thursday and Friday approach, the forecast reveals a decrease in rain chances back to about 30 percent.

With a more stable atmosphere settling in, expect mostly sunny skies and a return to slightly warmer temperatures in the low to mid-90s.

The pattern of warm and humid nights will persist, contributing to the typical summer feel.

Looking ahead to the weekend, Saturday’s weather is predicted to align with Thursday and Friday’s conditions, although there is a possibility of rising rain chances starting Sunday.

By then, daily rain probabilities could range between 30 to 50 percent, maintaining highs in the lower to mid-90s.

It appears that typical late June weather will continue into early July, marked by fluctuating rain chances and summer warmth.

Overall, as the summer progresses, Houstonians should prepare for a mix of seasonal highs and intermittent rainfall, typical of the region’s weather patterns.
