HOUSTON — Authorities have arrested a suspect in relation to a tragic shooting that occurred near Texas Southern University, resulting in the death of 18-year-old Gregory Warren.
The fatal incident took place on April 9, at the intersection of Rosewood and Ennis Streets, where Warren was discovered dead in the driver’s seat of a vehicle.
In the wake of the shooting, Texas Southern University and nearby schools were placed on lockdown as law enforcement searched for the suspect.
The alleged shooter, identified as Abraham Jackson, 31, managed to flee the scene but was apprehended nearly two months after the crime.
Jackson was brought before a judge charged with murder.
Prosecutors revealed that Jackson had arranged a cannabis deal with Warren via FaceTime before the incident.
Upon entering the car, Jackson is accused of shooting Warren in the neck and head.
Following the shooting, Jackson, along with another individual, is believed to have stolen a backpack and a heavy trash bag, hinting at possible robbery motives.
During the hearing, the judge set Jackson’s bond at $250,000, rejecting the defense’s request for a reduction to $30,000.
Jackson’s lawyer highlighted his responsibilities as a family man, claiming he resides with his wife and young daughter, and noting his absence from court for the past two years.
Despite these arguments, the judge took into account Jackson’s criminal history, which includes a felony probation for aggravated robbery and a previous 15-year prison sentence.
The judge emphasized the danger presented by someone armed during a drug deal that led to a fatality.
According to prosecutors, the severity of the crime could potentially lead to an upgrade in charges to capital murder.
Warren’s family has been vocal in seeking justice following his death.
His sister, Tierra Pearson, expressed her grief, stating, “It feels like a nightmare I can’t wake up from.
It feels like a bad movie.”
She fondly remembered her brother as a kind-hearted individual who put others before himself and cherished his family.
Warren’s move to Houston just last year was intended to signal a fresh start for him, and his family is heartbroken that his life was cut short before it truly began.
“It was just supposed to be a pleasant time for him.
He just turned 18, so he was about to start his life, and he got robbed of that,” lamented his father, Gregory Deshawn Warren Sr.
While the family feels a measure of relief with Jackson in custody, they also acknowledge that it cannot fill the void left by Warren’s death.
“It’s good news that you have him in custody, for sure, but it’s so bittersweet because it’s still so sad, and nothing’s going to take the pain away,” said Loralene Warren, Warren’s stepmother.
Compounding their grief, Warren’s family revealed that his mother, Tina Davis, 54, passed away just a week after her son.
They believe her declining health was a direct result of the heartbreak from losing Gregory.
“He killed my mom, too, because my mom died of a heartbreak because her son died,” stated Sarea Warren, his sister.
The family is dedicated to following the court proceedings closely, stating firmly, “He will have to sit there and look at our faces in court,” as they seek justice for both Gregory and Tina.
